So approximately forever ago (read: July), Cait and Mime answered these questions on their blog. And I was like "Oooooh, that's fun! I should do that!". So I hit the handy little "save for later" button in Feedly and, as I always do when I hit the "save for later" button, promptly forgot about it. (Seriously. I have stuff in there from 2012... It's scary in there.)
Today, I saw someone on Twitter talking about a bookish Q&A, and it rang a little bell in the back of my brain that sent me digging through the depths of Feedly for the questions because answering questions about books seems like an excellent way to spend a gloomy Wednesday afternoon!
1. Favourite childhood book?
Oh, please, like I can just pick one. When I was about five, it was Robert Munsch's The Paperbag Princess. (Or, really, anything by Robert Munsch EXCEPT A Promise Is a Promise, which was terrifying, or I Love You Forever, which gave me Feels. And Little Kirsti did not like having Feels.) When I was about seven or eight, it was pretty much anything by Laura Ingalls Wilder. And when I was about ten, it was anything by Brian Jacques. Holy crap, I loved the hell out of the Redwall books...
2. What are you reading right now?
I'm rereading Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment, and I'm reading Dracula for Classics Club. It seemed appropriate to read Dracula during October!
3. What books do you have on request from the library?
At the moment, none. Which is scandalous, I know. But I rarely request books from the library. I prefer to buy the books I'm really REALLY excited about, and pick up the others from the library when I happen to see them on the shelves.
4. Bad book habit?
Um. Reading too much?? OH WAIT. Reading books that I know I'll probably hate so that I have fodder for #stupidbookisstupid on Twitter. The internet asks, I deliver. Even though I probably shouldn't.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Considering I just got back from three weeks overseas, nothing. Unless you count the library where I work. In which case I have Neil Gaiman's Suddenly the Milk, which Little Miss A and I are slowly working our way through at bedtime when she stays over.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
Yes. I have a Kindle. And I love it. (Although I don't love the prices. Or the fact that I can't borrow e-books from my library...)
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time or several at once?
Generally one at a time. But seeing as classics can be pretty dense, I've been moving towards a one Classics Club book and one other simultaneously. Sometimes that morphs into one new book, one reread, one Classics Club book. But more than that makes my head hurt.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
I don't think so? I think I read more young adult books than I used to back in the day. But I'm not sure if that's because of blogging or if it's because of my librarianship degree...
9. Least favourite book you've read so far this year?
I'm torn between The Selection, which made me incredibly angry, and Winter Be My Shield, which was a Kindle Deal of the Day book that dragged on FOREVER and which I hated with the fire of a thousand suns.
10. Favourite book you've read so far this year?
Oof. I'm limiting this to books I've read for the first time this year, otherwise this would be impossible. It's a tie between Alysia Grey Painter's Fairwil, and Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass series. ALL OF THEM.
11. How often do you read outside your reading comfort zone?
Well, I'm doing the Classics Club challenge, and my list is filled with stuff I'm a little bit scared of, so I guess at least one book a month??
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
These days, probably YA. Back when I was living in Canberra, it was more a mix of crime and fantasy.
13. Can you read in the car?
YUP. I can read pretty much anywhere. Except the shower. Well. Until someone invents a waterproof e-reader, and then you'll never get me out of the shower again. MWAHAHAHA.
14. Favourite place to read?
Pretty much anywhere, really. I'm not fussy.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
As long as I've made sure my name is written in the front of it, sure! Just be prepared for me to not-so-subtly say "Hey, did I lend you _____? I can't seem to find it..." if you haven't given it back after like a month.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
Accidentally, yes. Intentionally? NO. That's why post-it notes and bookmarks were invented.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
My textbooks, yes. And the books I studied in high school English have scribble all over the pages. But a regular, run-of-the-mill novel? God, no.
18. Not even with textbooks?
Didn't we just cover that?
19. What is your favourite language to read in?
Gallifreyan. (Who the hell wrote these questions?!)
20. What makes you love a book?
I need to like the main characters, for starters. Other than that, it's all based on gut feeling.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
Pretty much anything. I'm a librarian, it's what I do. Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean someone else won't love it!
22. Favourite genre?
A tie between contemporary and urban fantasy. High fantasy can, as a general rule, go jump in a ditch.
23. Genre you rarely read but wish you did?
Biographies. I've enjoyed the ones I've read, but most of them are JUST SO LOOOOOOOONG. Can't they just skip over the boring bits?!
24. Favourite biography?
How appropriate. Easily Jenny Lawson's Let's Pretend This Never Happened.
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
Not that I can recall. OH WAIT. I read He's Just Not That Into You, but that was because I took insufficient books with me to Thailand and literally read my way through everything that all three of us had in our possession... (I rolled my eyes the whole way through it.)
26. Favourite cookbook?
Um. Probably the Australian Women's Weekly's Bake?? It's certainly the one I've used the most...
27. Most inspirational book you've read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
I'm not really sure I'd consider anything I've read this year to be inspirational. Unless it counts that I was inspired to not live in a dystopian world (1984, The Day of the Triffids) or get scurvy (Scurvy) or cholera (The Ghost Map)...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's probably quite enough for one blog post. So I'll post my answers to the remaining questions in the next couple of days.

ABC of travel
Yesterday, the lovely Deidre of Decoybetty tagged me in this. It's totally awesome and allows me wibble on about travel, even though I'm currently freezing to death in Melbourne. (HEY MELBOURNE - IT'S SUMMER, YOU NUMBSKULL!!! TURN UP THE TEMPERATURE!) Ahem.
A: Age you went on your first overseas trip. I'm pretty sure my first overseas trip was when we moved to Canada when I was four. The longest I've gone since then without going overseas was from October 1998 to September 2002.
B: Best (foreign) beer you've had and where. Yeah, I don't like beer. But there was a moment in Guatemala when it was so hot that my brain melted out of my ears and I decided that the only thing that would cool me down was beer. So I'm going to go with Brahva (not to be confused with Brahma) in Rio Dulce, Guatemala.
C: Cuisine (favourite). Mexican. Hands down. Although I'm also partial to Thai food. NOM NOM NOM.
D: Destinations, favourite, least favourite and why. Favourite? Either London or New York. Because history and museums and nerdiness, oh my! Least favourite? It's a toss up between Salem and Philadelphia. I found both of them disappointing. Or Quito, because I was by myself for five days and was too chicken to venture any distance from the hotel for fear of getting lost and then mugged. Yeah...
E: Event you experienced abroad that made you say 'wow!'. Flying over the Nazca lines in a teeny tiny plane.
F: Favourite mode of transport. I'm quite partial to trains. But mostly I tend to wander around on foot. Because it's free and I'm a cheapskate.
G: Greatest feeling while travelling. Seeing a new place for the first time.
H: Hottest place you've travelled to. Well, technically as I was living in Canberra at the time, it would be Melbourne on Black Saturday. It was around 47 degrees C in Melbourne that day. That's around 117 degrees F. (If you want to experience it, turn your oven on to the lowest setting, and open the door.) Other than that, it would be Guatemala, where it was a millionty degrees with something like 95% humidity. It was pretty unpleasant. Luckily, the amazingness of Tikal made me (partially) forget that it was hot and damp as a fat old man in a sauna. #gross
I: Incredible service you've experienced and where. The good people at Covermore travel insurance. They were AMAZING when Ness got sick in Peru. I've never been so glad to talk to a bogan with an ocker accent in my entire life.
J: Journey that took the longest. I think technically there was a trip home from Canada for Christmas one year when I was a kid that took around 48 hours door to door. But I don't remember any of it. So I'm going to go with flying from Melbourne to Lima. Or, more accurately, Melbourne to Sydney to Auckland to Santiago to Lima. My flight to Sydney left at around 8am and we arrived in Lima at 11.50pm Peru time. Which means it was about 4pm the following day in Melbourne. Fun times!
K: Keepsake from your travels. I seem to have a habit of not really thinking through what I buy overseas. Which is how I ended up buying a blanket in Peru during the first WEEK of a nine week trip. It's really hard to pack a pack around a BLANKET, as it turns out. Guess how many times I've used said blanket? NADA. Not my best purchase ever. What I *do* buy as keepsakes that are a good idea? Bookmarks. Because then every time you open your book, you go "awwwwww, good memories..."
L: Let down sight, where and why. Anything in Salem, Massachusetts. Epic waste of time.
M: Moment where you fell in love with travel. It was either one of the millionty museums I went to as a kid, or watching movies I shouldn't have been allowed to watch because we were on a plane and it was on a giant screen. That's how I saw Pretty Woman when I was four!
N: Nicest hotel you've stayed in. I have no idea what it was called, but when I was a kid, my dad went to a conference in Zurich. And the rest of the family tagged along for the ride. When we got to the hotel, it turned out they'd put us in the penthouse. Which had floor to ceiling glass windows giving us a panoramic view of Zurich. It was pretty awesome.
O: Obsession - what are you obsessed with taking pictures of while travelling? Landscapes. And museum objects. Every time I get home, my mum looks at my pictures and goes "BUT WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE?!?!" Whoops.
P: Passport stamps - how many and from where? In my current passport? 17. From the UK, the US, Peru, Machu Picchu, Ecuador, the Galapagos, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and Thailand. If you add in two of my three old passports (I couldn't find my very first passport. SAD FACE.), there's a total of 41 stamps, representing 16 different places.
Q: Quirkiest attraction you've visited and where: The big anything. Australia is littered with giant fibreglass crap. Here, for instance, is the big Ned Kelly in Glenrowan.
R: Recommended sight, event or experience: A Broadway show in New York. It's totally worth every penny.
S: Splurge - something you have no problem forking over money for while travelling. Once in a lifetime activities. Whether it's taking a helicopter to the Grand Canyon, flying over the Nazca Lines, riding an elephant, or going to the 20SB Summit to meet up with a bunch of random internet strangers!
T: Touristy thing you've done. Stood with one foot on each side of the equator.
U: Unforgettable travel memory. The Inca Trail. It may nearly have killed me, I may have cried like a little bitch until Ness yelled at me to stop because I was going to make her cry too, and it may have resulted in me almost getting stuck using a squat toilet when my quads cramped up. But it was totally worth it.
V: Visas - how many and for where? Surprisingly few, actually. A student visa for the UK, a residential visa for the UK from when I lived there as a kid, and a visa for France from back when Australia was cranky at France over nuclear testing in the Pacific, and so they made Australians jump through a million hoops to get into France. If I could find my very first passport, there'd probably be a residential visa for Canada in there too.
W: Wine - best glass of wine you've had while travelling and where. Much like beer, I don't drink wine. But I did have some pretty spectacular cocktails at La Boca del Lobo in Quito, Ecuador! (And if you're ever in Quito, you should check it out. It's a seriously awesome restaurant!)
X: eXcellent view and from where. Okay, first of all? Writing 'excellent' like that made me cringey. Secondly, here's a Peruvian volcano, complete with a vicuña in the foreground.
Y: Years spent travelling. 28, more or less. Sure, it may not all have been internationally, and it wasn't CONSTANT travel. But I don't think there's a single year in my life when I haven't boarded a plane/gotten in a car to somewhere or other!
Z: Zealous sports fans and where. We're pretty sports mad in Melbourne. I mean, we have a public holiday for a horse race, for crying out loud! But I'm pretty sure that no one in Melbourne has ever had to barricade themselves into their house in case the soccer hooligans get out of control as a friend had to do when she lived down the road from the stadium. So I'm giving the prize to Leicester, where I did my study abroad.

6) It's the end of the day and you just got done with class/work/etc. What's your routine? Possibly go to the gym on my way home, then come home and blog/comment/generally mess around on the internet while watching TV.
7) A big blizzard just hit and EVERYTHING is cancelled. What do you do with your day? Well, first of all, I'd panic because there's a blizzard in Melbourne ;) Sleep. And then watch Doctor Who.
8) When something BIG happens who is the first person you call? Sara. Except it's email rather than call, because she's on the other side of the world!
9) What is the one thing that can make you laugh EVERY TIME? The first episode of Black Books.
10) Your favorite part of the day? Sunset.

6) It's the end of the day and you just got done with class/work/etc. What's your routine? Possibly go to the gym on my way home, then come home and blog/comment/generally mess around on the internet while watching TV.
7) A big blizzard just hit and EVERYTHING is cancelled. What do you do with your day? Well, first of all, I'd panic because there's a blizzard in Melbourne ;) Sleep. And then watch Doctor Who.
8) When something BIG happens who is the first person you call? Sara. Except it's email rather than call, because she's on the other side of the world!
9) What is the one thing that can make you laugh EVERY TIME? The first episode of Black Books.

30 Days of Books - Day 30
So I should probably be going to bed instead of blogging, because I'm moving out tomorrow and still have a crapload of cleaning to do, but pfffffff... I spent all of today cleaning, and I'm pretty sure I now have the most spotless cupboards and oven in all of Canberra! Everything hurts now. I sat down at dinner with my parents and nearly fell asleep at the table... But you know, having to buy a ton of cleaning products hasn't been all bad - I just entered a giveaway on the paper towel packet to win $20,000, so fingers crossed!! ;)
Anyway, it's been a long time coming, but I've finally made it to Day 30. Yay!! Okay, it's taken me like a millionty days to get through it, but whatever.

Harry Potter. And yes, I'm counting them as one book. It's my blog and I can do what I want, dammit!! ;) Every time I read the books, I get something new out of them. For example, when I reread them in the lead up to the release of Deathly Hallow Part 2, I came across a bit in which Ron throws a crocodile heart at Malfoy during a Potions class. I have absolutely no memory of EVER reading that before, and I've been reading Harry Potter for 15 years now! It's a rare book indeed that you can read time and time again and still find something new in it every time. If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, Harry Potter is what I want to keep me entertained!
Appropriately, I'm currently using paper cups and plates that say "Happy Halloween" on them as I've packed all my crockery and glassware. I think J.K. Rowling would approve! Now if only I could learn how to do Accio so that I never again sit down only to find that I've left my water bottle on the other side of the room, all would be right with the world...
