You may have noticed, friends, that I haven't been around these here parts as much as usual in the past few weeks.
The reasons behind this are threefold:
1. 12WBT
Sometimes I feel like exercising and cooking and exercising some more takes up all my time, and by the end of the day? I kind of just want to collapse in a heap and not use my brain.
2. VEDA
Yeah, I don't even know how this happened. I uploaded a video on April 1st, and then a bunch of my friends were all "WE'RE DOING VEDA!!" and I figured that I'd unintentionally started doing VEDA anyway, so I may as well keep going. Of course, given that I'm also on the Snark Squad channel every week for Segue Magic, this means I'm currently posting EIGHT videos a week. Hahahahaha ohgod. It's a lot of videos. And between shooting and editing and watching other people's videos? Yeah, it eats into what little time is left once I finish all that exercising and cooking nonsense.
(But, like, if you want to see me wibbling about books even more than usual, you should probably check out my VEDA videos...)
3. I GOT A FREAKING JOB!!!!!!!!!!
That's right, friends. I found the Holy Grail - a full time job in my field. Okay, so it's only a 12 month contract, but STILL. I start tomorrow morning, and I'm kiiiiiiiiiiiind of terrified because it's been forever since I've had to be a responsible adult on a full time basis. But it'll be FINE. In a terrifying but-I-already-don't-have-time-to-blog kind of a way.
And hey - I have an insanely long commute to get to work, so maybe if I can reach a point where my brain in capable of constructing sentences at like 7.30am, I'll write blog posts on my phone instead! Maybe. We'll see.
I'll get back into the swing of adulthood eventually, so this definitely isn't goodbye. Hell, VEDA will be over in another week and a bit, which will give me at least an extra hour a day to play with. But if I'm not around for a little while? That's why.

Goodbye, VEDA
Back in April, my 101 in 1001 came to an end, and I put together my Life List. One of the things on that list was to complete VEDA again. Not only did I do that yesterday, but Emily and I organised the whole stinking thing. So I think it's safe to say that I kicked that goal's arse.
Once again, I have a VEDA hangover. Except this time, it comes with oh-God-I'm-like-ten-days-behind-on-watching-videos, and considering I was VEDA co-captain this year, I feel...obligated??...to finish watching everyone's videos. God even knows how long it's going to take me...
ANYWAY. That's why I haven't been around a whole lot over the past month. That, and I was working on backlogging about 20 posts for Snark Squad...
I think my editing and camerawork improved between last year and this year, as evidenced by the fact that when I went back and watched my videos from last year, at least half of them were out of focus. Well done, Past Kirsti. Well done... As always, you can check out the entire playlist here (you know, if you have a spare hour and eleven minutes. Which is a vast improvement on last year's hour and twenty-eight minutes). Or, if you'd prefer to just watch me make a fool of myself for three and a half minutes, you can watch my outtakes video. Flourless chocolate cake
So I made a birthday cake for my mum over the weekend, and decided to try a recipe I'd not used before. It turned out pretty damned well if I do say so myself!
I don't have any proper photos of it because I was busy making the recipe into a vlog for VEDA at the time, but I DO have a photo of the finished product, which is probably about all you really need. It's a really simple recipe and it turned out surprisingly well, so I figured (in light of the fact that it's been incredibly quiet around these parts recently) that I'd share it with you guys.
Ingredients
4 oz (115g) dark chocolate
125g unsalted butter
3/4 cup caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 eggs
1/2 cup cocoa
Chop chocolate and butter into small chunks. Melt together in a double boiler. Remove from heat, stir in caster sugar and vanilla. Allow to cool slightly, then whisk in eggs one at a time. Add cocoa and mix until just combined. Pour into a greased and lined 8" cake tin and bake at 190 degrees C (375 degrees F) for 20-25 minutes or until a thin crust forms on the top. Cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar to serve.
I'll be perfectly honest, the hardest part about this cake? Was getting it out of the tin. In the future, I think I'll be doing what several people said they do in the comments and making 1.5 times the recipe in a 9" springform tin!!

Movie Monday: Guardians of the Galaxy
Several things to note before we get this properly underway:
1. This will contain no spoilers. Well. Not unless you click through the jumpcut, anyway.
2. Movie Monday is going to become a "when I feel like it" thing rather than a regular weekly post. Because it's starting to get really hard to find movies that I love but haven't talked about yet. And a lot of the ones I have left that I want to talk about are movies that you need to be in the right headspace to watch (like The Shawshank Redemption or To Kill a Mockingbird)...
3. Sorry it's been crazy quiet around here recently. VEDA is taking up all my time and creativity. But, you know, you can go watch my videos if you really want to see what I've been up to lately. (Warning: may contain me humiliating myself)

Vlog ALL the vlogs!
That's right, kids. Tomorrow is 1 August, and that means precisely one thing: It's VEDA time!!
For those of you who weren't around these parts this time last year, VEDA is Vlog Every Day in August, and it has a tendency to take over my entire life. And it's been even worse this year because Emily and I ended up organising it, which means that we've spent the past few weeks developing forms and spreadsheets and topic ideas and liaising with our truly fabulous web development team to reboot the website.
All of this probably makes VEDA sound far more big and important than it really is, because there's only about fifty people involved. But still, we've put a fair whack of work into it already and it's not even August yet!
ANYWAY.
All of this is a really long-winded way of saying that I may be a little absent around these parts over the next month. But it's not because I don't love you guys. It'll just be because I've fallen into the Youtube black hole and I can't get out.
If you want to join us, it's not too late! You can read more about VEDA and/or sign up here. Or if you want to subscribe and watch all the ridiculous videos I'll be making over the next month, you can do that here. Lists. Lists of things. Things and stuff.
It's no secret that I'm kind of obsessed with lists. If I can procrastinate actually doing things by making a list of the things I have to do, I will do it. And then redo it, with colour coding. I think part of the reason why the 101 in 1001 appealed to me so much was because it was a list. Ultimately, though, I wasn't so good at the timing thing. I have a tendency to do half a dozen things from any list I make, then become complacent over how much I've accomplished and promptly slack off for the next three hundred years six months.
With all of that in mind, I decided that rather than attempting (and inevitably failing) another 101 in 1001 project, I'm going to take a leaf out of Deidre's book and have a life list instead. Said list will no doubt change pretty regularly, with things being added and removed as I see fit, but for now? Here's where things are at:

Sigh.
The past week or so has been...a wee bit trying.
Last week, I had a delightful cold in which my nose was simultaneously blocked AND running constantly, and went through three boxes of tissues in as many days.
Then on Saturday, I reached for a tissue and managed to knock over my water bottle. Of course the lid was off, and the contents went all over my keyboard. Of course my computer was ON at the time, and promptly shorted out. I've been using my dad's laptop since then (thankfully, my parents are in Vietnam at the moment so I don't have to fight him for it!), but it's incredibly slow and the mouse is indescribably sensitive - pretty much any time I try to move it to the right, it decides to adjust the zoom to 90%, and it has a tendency to hover over the favourites bar and randomly take me to other pages when I'm in the middle of doing something.
So on Monday morning, I phoned a computer repair place to get a ballpark figure of how much it would cost to fix. The answer? $44 to diagnose the actual problem, and then between $270 and $350 for the actual repairs. And that was just to sort out the motherboard. The fact that the battery light doesn't come on when I plug it in makes me suspect that there's something weird going on with the battery as well. So I think it's going to be more cost effective to go and buy a new one rather than repairing it. Especially seeing as it's been nothing but trouble since day one!
Then on Monday night at about 7pm, the power suddenly went out to the entire neighbourhood. I spent a good ten minutes wandering around the house by the light of the laptop screen locating candles and matches, and the following two and a half hours sitting by the light of about twenty tealight candles struggling to read my Kindle and dying of boredom. I honestly think the worst part was that I'd been planning on thawing something from the freezer for dinner. With the microwave out of commission, I had to change my plans a little.
Have you ever tried to make cheese sauce in the dark? For some reason, I decided that I should make macaroni and cheese, which turned into spaghetti and cheese sauce when I discovered that we didn't have any macaroni. Yeah, it was a terrible plan. Because it turns out it's really hard to make cheese sauce when you can't see what you're doing. It was probably a good thing that the lights were out, because I'm fairly certain it looked like vomit. Or Clag. Or both. It was lumpy as hell, at any rate. Plus, it turns out it's really hard to eat spaghetti that's covered in cheese sauce, because you twirl the fork and end up with the entire bowl in one big blob.
I had a job interview yesterday that I thought went pretty well. This afternoon, I got a rejection email. When I told my cousin, who's staying for a few weeks, she immediately decided that we needed to break out the ice cream and chocolate. I am one thousand per cent okay with this plan.
In completely unrelated news, I vlogged for the first time since finishing VEDA. I think we can all agree that my editing skills have improved as a result of making a video every day for thirty one days, yes?
This is random and filled with first world problems, and kind of has no logical ending. Sorry not sorry?

VEDA hangover
So as you may know, I spent last month participating in Vlog Every Day in August, hence the almost complete lack of content around these parts. Yes, I spent August making and editing and uploading a video every single day, as well as watching what felt like millions of videos from my fellow VEDA-ians (VEDA-ites??) and commenting and participating in ridiculous conversations on Twitter, and basically? It was exhausting but completely and utterly awesome.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat, and there's actually a group of us on Twitter discussing the possibility of vlogging on a weekly basis. I'll definitely join in on that one provided someone who's not me comes up with topics for us to discuss, because no topics = Kirsti rambling uselessly for a millionty years, and no one wants to watch that!
ANYWAY.
I hereby present to you a list of things I learnt during VEDA:

I'll definitely join in on that one provided someone who's not me comes up with topics for us to discuss, because no topics = Kirsti rambling uselessly for a millionty years, and no one wants to watch that!
ANYWAY.
I hereby present to you a list of things I learnt during VEDA:
- Youtube is an evil bitch. A two minute video will suddenly decide it's going to take three hours to upload. It will randomly decide that you don't need to see all your subscriptions in your subscription feed, meaning that you have to go to each individual channel to check if someone's made a new video. It will one day decide that no, you don't need to watch this particular video and refuse to load it for three hours straight. And it will give you 31 days of consecutive unflattering thumbnail options.
- Youtube's captchas are the most illegible things on the face of the earth.
- Some topics will take you five minutes to film. Others will take an hour, and most of your footage will be of you trailing off mid-sentence and then staring out the window for five minutes trying to work out how to get your point across. And sometimes, you'll do the perfect take only to realise that you didn't actually hit record. Sigh.
- Never underestimate the importance of editing.
- If you make a video about the importance of thinking before you vote, don't let your mother see it, because she'll cackle hysterically because she thinks you sound like a newsreader... (HI MUM)
- VEDA brings all the feels. You will cry at least a dozen times.
- Blooper Day will take you approximately a hundred years to pull together. Start early.
- Everyone loves Harry Potter. EVERYONE.
- The quality of your gear does not dictate the quality of your videos.
- This community is made of solid gold awesome.

Well, hello! You probably thought I was dead, huh? Yeah, it turns out this whole making a vlog every day for a whole month thing takes up a shit ton of time. WHO KNEW?! Movie Monday: AFI 100 Years 100 Films edition
So you guys probably know that one of the things I have on my Day Zero list is to watch all 100 films on the AFI's 2007 version of their 100 Years, 100 Films list. I've now ploughed my way through around a third of them, and as I've not had time to prepare a proper post today (VEDA is still taking up pretty much all of my time), I figured that I'd tell you what I thought of them! The numbers against each movie are their rankings in the AFI list.
#1 - Citizen Kane

I've always found this movie kind of confusing - it seems to dump you into the middle of the action with no idea of who anyone is, and as a result I have a hard time keeping the characters straight. I can tell you one thing though - Michael Corleone is a douchebag.
#3 - Casablanca
I'm not a huge fan of Humphrey Bogart for unspecified reasons. There's just something about him that doesn't quite gel for me. Anyway, despite that, I kind of love this movie.
#5 - Singin' in the Rain
YES OMG PERFECT MOVIE IS PERFECT SO MUCH LOVE. I could watch it every single day and never get bored. Appropriately, I'm seeing the stage version on Thursday night.

I was TERRIFIED of this movie as a child. As a 30 year old? It's still terrifying. And pretty crap because it's now insanely dated. Mini Drew Barrymore was an unexpected highlight.

SO much longer than I remembered, but filled with the most amazing facial expressions. Christopher Plummer gives crazy good bitchface.
#50 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
While I love this movie, I still don't entirely understand why they'd put Fellowship on the list over the other two, which were FAR more interesting in my opinion. The Two Towers is my personal favourite, but about 90% of that is due to Legolas sliding down the stairs on a shield.

Still surprisingly terrifying in parts, even if you know what's coming. Also, considering how young he was, Haley Joel Osment is kind of incredible.

Two weeks into August means two weeks into VEDA! Seriously, how the hell are we half way through the month already?!

I don't really have a favourite. I love all the cover art that Josh Kirby did for Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, but at the moment? I can't get over how gorgeous the new US covers of Harry Potter are. Kasu Kibuishi really captured the essence of the books.

I've just started The Cuckoo's Calling, which is J.K. Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith. I've heard excellent things, so I can't wait to get stuck into it!

I've got a few things sitting in my to read pile at the moment, so it'll either be Bill Bryson's At Home or Alysia Gray Painter's Redwoodian.

Books are crazy expensive in Australia - the standard price of a trade paperback is $20 - and given how much I read, I'd be completely and utterly broke if I bought every single book I bought!! Obviously, anything for my Kindle comes from Amazon. If I'm browsing, it'll probably be at Dymocks because they have a great rewards program, and if I'm buying online, it's more than likely through Book Depository.
When you were little, did you have any particular reading habits?
Read All The Things All The Time? There's not a lot to it than that. Unless you count reading a 1,200 page Dickens omnibus at the age of ten to be a particular reading habit...

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I've talked before about how I read this and Chamber of Secrets on a flight from London to Melbourne and how I didn't sleep the entire way because I had to keep reading. Life would never be the same.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta, and Kelley Armstrong's Bitten.

Currently...
Given that I've been rather absent in the past ten days, I figured that I should let you all know that I'm not dead. You know, in case you were wondering. But considering I've used all of my brain power and cleverness on VEDA, I couldn't come up with anything particularly interesting to say.
So instead of thinking up a blog post, I figured I'd use the opportunity to catch you all up on what's been happening recently through a handy dandy meme thingy!
Watching:
I'm very late to the party on this one, but I've been watching a LOT of Veronica Mars recently. It's absolutely phenomenal, and I'm insanely excited about the movie coming out next year. Other than that, there's the usual Buffy and Angel for Snark Squad, and an AWFUL lot of Youtube videos, courtesy of VEDA.
Listening to:
The Pitch Perfect soundtrack is on high rotation at the moment. Also Titanium, because it's freaking awesome. The new Scouting for Girls single, Millionaire. And a lot of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes for reasons that will be discussed below!
Planning:
Tomorrow's VEDA video. Sunday's VEDA video. SO MANY VEDA VIDEOS. Super secret things that may or may not end up happening. We shall see...
Thinking about:
The fact that I upped my squat weight and my lunge weight at Body Pump today (15kg and 12.5kg respectively), and nailed it. How many VEDA videos I still have to watch. What to watch for Movie Monday. How many episodes of Veronica Mars I can watch tonight.
Looking forward to:
VEDA being over so I don't feel stressed out about not having time to watch All the Videos. Eventually having a job. October, because it's going to feature Must Be Thrifty and Cheap Geek's wedding, Kat visiting Melbourne, AND seeing Me First and the Gimme Gimmes live in concert. SQUEEEEE!!!!
Reading:
'Legend' by Maria Lu. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it - it feels a lot like every other dystopian YA I've read in the past couple of years. You know, girl meets boy, they don't get along, the government is evil, boy and girl fall for each other despite everything. I'm about two thirds of the way through, so maybe something dramatically different will happen between now and the end of the book to make me absolutely fall in love with it, but at this point? It's enjoyable but nothing out of the ordinary.
Making me happy:
The fact that I applied for graduation yesterday, and will be graduating with distinction. Making it through the entire shoulder track at Pump this morning without needing to change my weights. VEDA. Veronica Mars. Chocolate. You know, the usual.

It's the first day of VEDA, so I'm probably having a nervous breakdown in the corner, because 31 is a lot of videos, it seems like I'm the only participant in the southern hemisphere, and I'm about 15 hours ahead of most other participants, meaning that unless I upload my videos at the last minute every time, mine will go up waaaaaaaaaaaaay before anyone else's. So, this is not *really* relevant to the story, but you mentioned crying once while watching HIMYM.
I can think of seven episodes off the top of my head that have made me ugly cry. And the one where Ted realizes he's all alone? SOBS.

On Marvel movies trump DC movies:
I know I've said I don't want to see MoS, but I kinda do now, just to use it as a drinking game. Drink every time they tell instead of showing. Drink every time someone says or does something unintentionally funny.
Maybe it's just my dislike of DC in general making me a little biased, but I just can't get behind their films. I would pay good money to see a Wonder Woman film, but only if it was helmed by someone who knows how to make a superhero movie that isn't trying to be a Superhero Movie. Other than that, anything DC related... I'll enjoy it while I'm watching it, but about half an hour after I get out of the cinema (so I guess they do their job in that respect) the cons start outweighing the pros, and then I just start to get annoyed. Over all, the reason I'm not a fan of DC is because I just can't connect with the characters.
Also, let's be honest. Clark Kent is flying around in Kryptonian underwear. That's worse than Ms Marvel's old bodysuit getup, and they're comparable power wise. At least Carol has a proper suit now, Clark hasn't graduated to that stage of heroics yet.
Maybe it's just my dislike of DC in general making me a little biased, but I just can't get behind their films. I would pay good money to see a Wonder Woman film, but only if it was helmed by someone who knows how to make a superhero movie that isn't trying to be a Superhero Movie. Other than that, anything DC related... I'll enjoy it while I'm watching it, but about half an hour after I get out of the cinema (so I guess they do their job in that respect) the cons start outweighing the pros, and then I just start to get annoyed. Honestly, this Clark Kent seemed like a total, driftless loser. And yes, the whole Jesus/saviour of mankind analogy was slathered on a bit strong there.
Also: Lois Lane running about doing reporter stuff in those heels. Are they serious? They put her in a smart looking pant-suit and then whack on heels and make her run across fields or broken-down cities. It drove me crazy.

I didn't watch either of these shows. I had a hard time believing Kristen Bell was a teenager, which is weird because she was only like 22 or 23 at the time and is teeny tiny, but I just didn't buy it. And I never watched Dollhouse (it didn't get a ton of press here, either, and by the time anybody really knew it existed it was cancelled) but HOLY PHOTOSHOP on that second pic. Jeez. They look like wax figurines.
Big Whedon fan, NOT a Dollhouse fan. In fact, I couldn't finish the series either.

On On why I prefer Elementary to Sherlock:
I watched both and definitely prefer Elementary. I love the depth of the relationships and the acting, as you said, is phenomenal. I love that there are enough elements from the book in the series to keep me engaged and that the settings are contemporary enough to do the same. I thought it was a great balance :)

Comfort zones and being outside them
So part of the reason why I started doing my 101 in 1001 list all those years ago was to try and force myself out of my comfort zone a little bit. And given that a decent chunk of the stuff left on the list requires money (given that I wrote it before I decided to go back to university and all...), and I currently don't really have any on account of having been a student for the past year and a half, I've hit something of a brick wall in regards to crossing things off the list. And as a result, my comfort zone has gotten increasingly more comfortable of late.
So when I saw Sweeney tweeting yesterday about something I've seen her participate in a bunch of times before, I figured that maybe - even though the idea kind of freaks me out a little bit - I should join in and get out of my comfort zone again.
That's right, kids. I'm going to attempt VEDA! (Vlog Every Day in August, for those of you not down with the acronym lingo)
It's definitely going to get me out of my comfort zone, because while I've made quite a few vlogs this year, I tend to spend days agonising over the filming and the editing and only recording when I'm in the middle of a very good hair day. With VEDA, I won't have that luxury. But with any luck, I'll get better at making shorter videos, and getting them edited and up online quickly!
So for the month of August, there will (barring any complications) be a new video up on my Youtube channel every day. As a result, I'll probably be posting here a bit less often, given that I'll be making a video every day, as well as posting on Snark Squad four times a week. But don't worry - I'm not going anywhere, and if you want to witness all the awkward, you can always subscribe on Youtube.
