Middlemarch - George Eliot
I have a confession to make: I got this book as a present for my seventeenth birthday. It's taken me fifteen years to get around to reading it. Why? Because I had to read The Mill on the Floss for first year university fourteen years ago, and it was non-stop struggle street for me. Essentially, it put me off reading George Eliot for a really long time.
So when I was putting together my Classics Club list, I figured I may as well put this one on the list and see if I could get over my preconceived notions about George Eliot.
I...had mixed feelings about this book. It's essentially the story of a town's worth of inhabitants. The story starts with one or two major characters, then moves on to focus on a couple of characters who appeared as minor characters in the previous section etc etc.
As a general rule, I struggle with stories that jump around between a lot of characters. I had the same feelings about Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell, and Shirley by Charlotte Bronte. Hell, I even felt that way about Game of Thrones. And it's not because any of those books were bad (although personally, I thought Game of Thrones was decidedly mediocre). It's just that they jumped around so much that I found it difficult to keep all the different threads of the story straight in my head, and I struggled with the sections dealing with characters that I didn't especially care for.
What I liked most about Middlemarch was that the characters weren't perfect. And I'm not talking flawed in the way that Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are flawed where you can't help but love them. In Middlemarch, the characters are deeply flawed. They don't always get happily ever afters. They rush into marriage and then discover that their new spouse isn't the person they thought. They stand back and let people die. They hold grudges, they screw up, they're vindictive, they're petty.
And all of that was great. They were actual human characters leading actual human lives. But there were a lot of characters that I just didn't particularly care about. Either I didn't find them interesting or their stories dragged on and on without any real progress for hundreds of pages, and then all of a sudden things would be wrapped up in a neat little package with two pages to spare.
Really, I think the problem here was me more than the book. It was long and often dry, and there were times when I felt like I was reading page after page without making any real progress. The characters that I liked were enough to get this a three star rating from me. But I definitely didn't have the five star "OMG AMAZING" experience that so many others seem to have had. Which, frankly, makes me a little bit sad.
Have you read it? What did you think?

Bout of Books 14 - Days 5 to 7
I had grand intentions of doing an update over the weekend, but obviously that didn't go quite as planned. Still, I'm pretty pleased with the way the readathon ended up. I met all three of my goals, and I was able to get through all four Throne of Glass books with time to recover before Queen of Shadows comes out next week.
FRIDAY
Pages read: 519
Total pages: 2,957
Books finished: Men of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong (3/5 stars), Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas (4.5/5 stars)
Total books finished: 6
SATURDAY
Pages read: 272
Total pages: 3,229
Books finished: Middlemarch by George Eliot (3/5 stars)
Total books finished: 7
SUNDAY
Pages read: 156
Total pages: 3,385
Books finished: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (4.75/5 stars)
Total books finished: 8
I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get through the remaining hundred-odd pages of Down Under by Bill Bryson. But you can't win them all. And considering I had to get up at 5.15 this morning, choosing sleep over finishing a book was definitely the right decision.

Bout of Books 14 - Day 1 and 2
I had grand plans for doing a recap of day 1 last night, but then I went out for dinner straight after work and didn't get home until 9.30, at which point I promptly uploaded a couple of vlogs for VEDA and Snark Squad and collapsed into bed.
So I'll update you guys on two days worth of reading instead of one!
In the past, I've been sure to make sure that I finish a bunch of books on the Sunday before so that I can start All! Books! From! The! Beginning! and have the entire book count towards my Bout of Books page count. But since I've implemented my current reading strategy (which I really must make a video about at some stage...), that approach doesn't work quite as well. So some of the books I'll be listing, I only read part of during the readathon. The page counts don't include what I'd already read before Monday though!
MONDAY
Pages read: 655
Total pages: 655
Books finished: The Last Oracle by James Rollins (3/5 stars)
Total books finished: 1
TUESDAY
Pages read: 601
Total pages: 1,256
Books finished: The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas (5/5 stars)
Total books finished: 2
I'm getting closer and closer to finishing Middlemarch. I'm down to about 100 pages remaining, so it will DEFINITELY be finished this week.

Bout of Books goals
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 17th and runs through Sunday, August 23rd in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 14 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team
So. Bout of Books 14 starts on Monday, and as such I figured it was probably about time that I talked about my goals for the week ahead. I'm not setting myself a certain number of books or a certain page count per day this time around, so my goals are pretty simple.
1. Finish MiddlemarchI've been reading Middlemarch since 21 July, and while I've been making steady progress (I'm currently just past page 600) I'm really very ready to be done with it. So I'm making it one of my goals to get through the last 200-ish pages next week.
2. Participate in a challenge
This was one of my goals last time, and I failed spectacularly due to an unusually busy week. This time around? I'm determined to do better.
3. Only pick up rereads
Look, this one is partly in place because I really want to reread all four of the Throne of Glass books before Queen of Shadows comes out on 1 September. But it's also because I don't really feel like I'm doing new books justice if I race through them during a readathon. So, with the exception of finishing off Middlemarch, I'm aiming for a reread-only event!
That's it for me this time around. Pretty simple goals, I know, but considering I don't have a whole lot of free time these days - especially seeing as we're smack bang in the middle of VEDA - I didn't want to set a bunch of targets and then find myself unable to achieve them. Hell, even if the only one I achieve is finishing Middlemarch? I'm going to be calling it a success.

Twelve weeks on...
Remember back in March how I signed up for the 12 Week Body Transformation?
Yeah.
It finished on Sunday, and I'm pleasantly surprised with how it went. Sure, it wasn't always easy to get home and do an hour-long workout. And it wasn't always easy to eat within my calories sand make sure I followed the recipes exactly even when it involved a truly sarcastic amount of rice.
But it paid off. I lost 7.5kg over the 12 weeks. My fitness score went from 25 to 75. Which probably means precisely nothing to you, but it means I've gone from being able to "run" a kilometre in just under 10 minutes to being able to RUN a kilometre in about five and a half minutes (although admittedly, doing so totally massacred my lungs and I coughed for the next three days...). I can do a wall sit for nearly a minute longer than I could before. My flexibility has improved by 7cm. I can do planks and push ups on my toes. The 12WBT recommended that I sign up for the advanced program next time around (hahaha ohgod).
And for the most part, the food was totally delicious. Sure, there were times when something was ridiculously time consuming or it just wasn't my cup of tea. But on the whole? It was really tasty and really filling and a pretty big serving considering it was part of a calorie controlled menu.
I'm trying things on my own for a while, to see if I can keep up the exercise and keep eating smaller servings and healthy options as much as possible. But it will be nice not to have to push myself to burn 1000 calories every Saturday or do a full hour's workout if I'm exhausted/sick/just in need of a night off.
I'm hoping to lose another 5kg. But we'll see how it goes... Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Twelve weeks? That's nothing, right??
Remember how I had "lose 5 kilos" on my 101 in 1001 list? And remember how I achieved that goal in 2013? And remember how I lost a ton of weight between 2006 and 2009?
Yeah. About that...
In the past year or so, I've been going to the gym less and sitting around the house more. Why? Because the gym's been dicking around with the group fitness timetable, moving classes around. Because instructors have been injured for extended periods and so they've replaced the classes I love with classes I can't stand or without any sense of certainty that the class will be on. Because MyFitnessPal was too hard to do while travelling and when I got home, I couldn't get back into the habit of using it. Because it's raining/I have cramps/I slept funny and my hip hurts/it's too hot/all my socks are in the wash.
Because of crappy excuses, basically .
That 5 kilos I lost in 2013? I've gained it all back, plus an extra 4 kilos. I haven't weighed this much since 2007. And now that the gym's cancelled Body Combat because apparently I was one of about 10 people who a) loved it and b) was able to attend a class at 4.30pm on a Tuesday, my motivation to go to the gym is even more non-existent.
Tracking my calories just made me feel guilty about everything I ate, and without the motivation to go to the gym, things were never going to change.
So I decided to take the plunge and sign up for the 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge.
Starting on Monday, I'll be doing an hour of exercise every weekday, doing a 1000 calorie work out on Saturdays, and eating to a carefully calculated menu plan formulated by Not Me, and which is therefore sadly lacking in my two favourite food groups: cheese and chocolate.
So for the next 12 weeks, my schedule will look like this:
Monday: Cardio
Tuesday: Weights
Wednesday: Cardio
Thursday: Weights
Friday: Stretch class
Saturday: BURN ALL THE CALORIES
Sunday: Cry and cover entire body in Dencorub.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be crying on my birthday, which falls on a Saturday this year.
One of the pre-season tasks that we're supposed to do is tell everyone we know that we're doing the challenge so that we're accountable and people can be supportive blah blah blah. So this is me, shouting it from the rooftops to the internet: I'm doing the 12WBT. I'm terrified. But I'm doing it. And frankly, I'm pretty excited to get started. But, you know, in a terrified sort of a way...
In short, if you see me posting pictures of chocolate or cake or one of the many delicious forms of deep fried potato in the next three months, just go ahead and send me this gif as a reminder to get back on track:
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to make a bunch of motivational playlists.

We need diverse books
I mentioned yesterday that I was planning an entire reading project this year. And that project is pretty simple: in 2014, I read a truly disappointing number of diverse books. In 2015, I want to rectify that. There are thousands and thousands of diverse books out there, and they deserve the chance to be read and be talked about.
There are audiences out there who desperately want diverse books, who don't want to see the same old white girl trying to decide between two white boys love triangle that seems to have become such a tried and true method of storytelling over the past few years, particularly in YA. And for those of us who see ourselves in the never-ending stream of middle class white girl narrators? Well, taking a walk in someone else's shoes and learning something new about the world and just how much privilege we have is always a good idea.
So this year, I'm doing a little project on Youtube. I'm going to read 50 books with diverse narrators, and vlog about a different one each week. Add in a week each for introducing and wrapping up the project, and you've got yourself a year. How convenient!
Any book suggestions are welcome, as long as they have diverse narrators!!
Seriously, though. I need suggestions. Kthxbai.
Are you doing any book challenges this year?

TTT - Bookish goals for 2015
Another Tuesday already? Must be time to talk about books and link up with the Broke and the Bookish!
I did pretty well on my bookish goals for this year. I wanted to read more books than last year, and I've read more than 100 books than I did in 2013. Uh, whoops? I've reread a lot, tracked my page counts, participated in two Bout of Books, reviewed every book I read, read more non-fiction than last year, and read two classics that I hadn't read before. I didn't do so great on DNFing (it's hard to persuade myself to DNF something I paid money for) or reading outside my comfort zone, but you can't win them all...
On to my goals for 2015!
1. To read at least 200 books
Interestingly, I think the reading strategy I adopted this year - which I'll talk about next week - helped me read WAY more books than last year. So where in the past I've been able to get to between 160 and 175 books in a year, I think my new strategy can help me smash 200 again. It's such a nice round number...
2. To complete the 2015 reading challenge
![]() |
| Popsugar has a printable version |
Honestly, I don't even remember where I originally found this. Tumblr, maybe?? But it's a pretty great way to force myself to read outside my comfort zone, so I'm going to give it a shot!
3. To DNF when required
Seriously, I've read so many books this year that have been downright terrible and/or rage-causing. Next year, I should really just...not bother to finish them.
4. To track my reading statistics
My original plan for this year was just to track my page numbers, but I've since started tracking a whole stack of other information that I'll talk about (probably in more detail than you ever wanted) next week. It's been really interesting to see how things pan out in terms of various things, and I want to keep tracking all of that next year.
5. To read outside my comfort zone
Hopefully between Classics Club and that reading challenge up in #2, I'll do better at this next year. Because yeah. I really sucked at it this year.
6. To participate in at least one Bout of Books
I don't think I'll be participating in the January one, simply because it's in like five minutes time and I'm not quite ready for that just yet. But later in the year, when things are a little calmer, I'll join in.
7. Try to balance my new reads and rereads
Just shy of 40% of my books this year were rereads, so I didn't do TOO badly on this one. But next year, I'd like to try and get it closer to 50%, because I have a LOT of rereads that still need to be reviewed.
8. To review every book I read
The main challenge on this one is when I finish a book just before I go to sleep. I have a tendency to write "review to follow" on Goodreads and then totally forget to go back and actually write a review. See also: Daughter of Blood and Starlight, which I read in early 2013 and still haven't reviewed. Whoops?
9. To reread mostly books I haven't reviewed
There are some obvious exceptions here in the form of books that I want to reread before the movie comes out (Paper Towns) or books I need to reread because the sequel has just been released and I have no idea what happened in the previous books (pretty much anything ever, to be honest). But for the most part, I'd like my rereads to be books that need reviewing, because otherwise I tend to just reread the same books over and over again (*cough* Persuasion *cough*).
10. To read at least twelve non-fiction books
This shouldn't be TOO difficult, I hope. I managed more than that this year. But then again, I only managed 3 non-fiction books in 2013... One a month shouldn't be too much of a challenge though. Surely...
What are your bookish goals for the year ahead?

Dracula - Bram Stoker
![]() |
| Please excuse the terrible image. Penguin have updated the cover multiple times since this edition. Source. |
With Dracula finished, I'm officially a sixth of the way through my Classics Club books. High five, self! It seemed only appropriate that I read this in the lead up to Halloween. Because when you're talking about spooky stories, you really can't look past this one.
I'd read it before, back when I was about 14, and I remember finding it really boring. There were too many narrators and I didn't care about the random chase across Europe and UGH GET TO THE POINT ALREADY WE KNOW HE'S A VAMPIRE WHY IS THIS BOOK SO LONG?
Present Day Kirsti appreciated it a lot more than 14 Year Old Kirsti. I loved the multiple narratives and how they each offered different parts of the story and different viewpoints. Van Helsing and Dr. Seward offer medical opinions while Jonathan Harker's journal fills us in on who Dracula really is. Mina's journal, in contrast, is largely matter-of-fact. While it's initially filled with typical female thoughts from the time - look at the pretty scenery, isn't Lucy lovely, I'm a little worried about my fiance - it rapidly became the most interesting of the narratives for me.
I must admit, I had a full-on headdesk moment over the total inability to realise what was happening to Mina. I mean, you've literally JUST killed Vampire!Lucy and most of you saw Lucy all the way through her illness and TWO OF YOU HAVE MEDICAL DEGREES, but none of you can spot the exact same symptoms in Mina as were happening in Lucy? Okay, morons. Whatever. (Which isn't to say that it wasn't enjoyable to read. It just resulted in me feeling like I had to yell "LOOK BEHIND YOU" at them like they were in a pantomime for a decent chunk of the book...)
So yes. It was well written, I loved the different narration, and the voices were suitably different for each narrator. It was way creepier than I remembered, which was quite exciting because prior to this reread I was a little baffled by why such a big deal was made of the story. And it features all sorts of vampire legends in there from garlic to crucifixes to not being able to cross running water to turning into bats. It's pretty cool stuff.
And, as a fan of Supernatural, there was one moment that made me laugh quite a lot: "I propose that we add Winchesters to our armament. I have a kind of belief in a Winchester when there is any trouble of that sort around." (p. 417)
Have you read Dracula? What did you think?

Bout of Books 11, Days 1-4
Uh, whoops? I had grand intentions of posting updates more regularly than this. But somehow this week turned out to be busier than I'd anticipated. As a result, I haven't read quite as much as I'd planned, and I haven't yet met my goal of participating in a Bout of Books Challenge. But I'm doing okay on my other goals, so at least I'm not TOTALLY failing!
Monday
Books read: A Very Unusual Pursuit by Catherine Jinks

Total pages: 330.
Total books finished: 1
Tuesday
Books read: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

I had grand plans for finishing The Silkworm yesterday, but was forced to abandon those plans just before midnight when I realised that I had to get up at 6.15am and I should probably get some sleep. Still, I'm enjoying the lower-key challenge this time around, and all three of these books have come from my TBR pile, so it's going pretty well!
How's your Bout of Books challenge going?

101 in 1001: the wrap up
As I mentioned on Monday, my 101 in 1001 finished yesterday. So let's wrap this thing up, shall we?! I figured the easiest way to do this was to dump the entire list in here, and deal with each item individually. Feel free to scroll straight to the bottom if you just want the final statistics part!
1. Visit a new country DID IT. New Zealand in November.
2. Visit somewhere new in Australia On the Not Gonna Happen pile.
3. Host a dinner party DID IT.
4. Live offline for a weekend HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. As if. On the Not Gonna Happen pile.
5. Make jam DID IT.
6. Watch the AFI Top 100 Movies (2007 edition) I managed 66 out of 100, which I think is pretty damned good, considering how long and difficult to find a lot of them were!
7. Go out for New Year's DID IT. Sort of...

84. Adopt a dog Not Gonna Happen pile.

87. Go ice skating Womp womp. I thought about doing this when I was in DC last year, but we were told that we weren't allowed to... There are a couple of ice rinks in Melbourne though, it's just insanely pricey...
88. Go stargazing Another epic fail. I hoped that the clouds would clear when Ness and I were at Waitomo looking at glowworms, but I guess they don't call it the Land of the Long White Cloud for nothing!
89. Spend a rainy day watching movies in my PJs DID IT. I crossed off three AFI movies in one day thanks to this. Although one of them was Platoon, which caused immense trauma...

98. Go out for dinner to celebrate the end of the challenge (1 April 2014) I ate green chicken curry in front of My Kitchen Rules instead. Womp womp.
99. Try 5 new cocktails (5/5) DID IT.
100. Seriously investigate doing my PhD DID IT.
101. Donate $10 to charity for each unfinished goal Not Gonna Happen pile.
So, in total? I finished 58 of my 101 tasks, and have given myself a partial credit/"I'll do/finish this someday" for another 12. 25 of them ended up on the Not Gonna Happen pile due to changing circumstances or "WTF was I thinking??" or (mostly) a lack of money to actually be able to do them. Which leaves me with a grand total of FIVE TASKS that were a flat out fail. Which isn't too shabby when you look at it like that!
I'm still trying to decide whether or not I want to do another 101 in 1001 list. There were things that I really enjoyed about it. But I also ended up feeling guilty any time I went a month without crossing something off or when I knew something was going to be a fail. So I don't know. Maybe I'll switch to a Life List, like Deidre has, that can be constantly changing and evolving and which doesn't have a timeframe associated with it!
What do you think? 101 in 1001 or Life List?

101 in 1001: the stuff that won't be happening
There are now a whopping 25 days left of my 101 in 1001 challenge (plus the six hours that are remaining of today, but that doesn't really count), and I still have a fairly staggering forty eight tasks that aren't completed. There will be a few more crossed off between now and 1 April, but a decent chunk of them definitely won't be finished.
The fact of the matter is that when I wrote this list, I wasn't anticipating going back to university. I wasn't expecting to spend the vast majority of the 1001 days without a job. I didn't foresee a world in which I'd be trying to break into a new field AGAIN. As a result, a decent number of the tasks require money, which is something that I'm lacking at the moment. There are other tasks which lie abandoned simply because I'm not the same person I was when I put them on the list. I look at them periodically and think "I should really do something about that...". And then I forget about it for another two months.
Still, I think the fact that I managed to cross off 52 tasks (thus far) is pretty damned good, given that a lot of them (i.e. "Read 100 new books") contained multiple parts!
So. Let's get to the stuff that won't be happening, shall we?
2. Visit somewhere new in Australia.
One of those pesky money requiring ones. I had this vague idea that it would be somewhere like Kangaroo Island or Broome. Instead, the most exciting new place I've been to in the past three years was Melbourne's western suburbs. And I'm not sure that even remotely counts.
4. Live offline for a weekend.
Bitch, please. Our internet went down a few weekends ago. I lasted two of the most boring hours of my life before I was ready to use my entire data allowance in one go.
12. Jog every day for a week.
I hate jogging/running. It hurts my knees and my boobs and it's one of the few remaining things that kicks in my exercise-induced asthma. Quite why I thought I should jog every day for a week is beyond me, considering the Couch to 5K is only three times a week... Anyway, I could cheat and jog leisurely around the block every day. But that's just cheating.
13. Move out of home again.
Requires paying rent, which requires having money, which requires having a job. Next.
20. Put away $20 for every completed task.
This was a nice idea. And maybe if I'd done it gradually, it would have worked. But to now come up with $1,040 is a bit of a big ask.
23. Paint a room.
This one was put on there because when I wrote the list, my little brother and his (now ex-)girlfriend were looking at buying a house. The houses they were looking at all needed a little bit of fixing up, which would have let me cross this one off the list. Then they gave up on looking for a house, and this task has languished pathetically ever since.
24. Go to the opera.
Two reasons why this hasn't happened: 1. Opera is expensive, 2. For some reason, I had it in my head that the opera in question would be The Marriage of Figaro. Rudely, Opera Australia (and Opera Victoria, for that matter) have refused to bow to my whim to see The Marriage of Figaro. And I haven't had the urge to fork out a fairly large sum of money to see any of the operas they've ACTUALLY staged.
26. Go to the symphony.
See reason 1 above. Also an adapted version of reason 2, wherein I wasn't interested enough in anything they were doing to go. Except for the Doctor Who Spectacular, and I didn't realise that was on until it was sold out. Womp womp.
27. Sing karaoke.
I think I forgot about the part where I can barely talk in front of a group of more than three people without combusting in embarrassment. God only knows why I thought I could sing karaoke...
32. Buy an original piece of art.
I still really REALLY want to do this. But art costs money. Are you starting to see a trend here??
34. Learn a new piece on the piano.
I think Past!Kirsti had big ideas of getting back into music and mental images of something resembling Elizabeth Bennet at Pemberley. Present!Kirsti acknowledges that she doesn't remember how to read bass clef, was never very good at piano anyway, and doesn't have the motivation to practice. Plus, our piano hasn't been tuned in at least 10 years.
38. Take a photography class.
I could take one online for free, but I'm pretty sure that I'd learn more being in a room with other people and actually getting feedback on my photos. Which would cost money.
48. Voluntarily add to my superannuation.
Look, I could have added like $20 to my super and called it done. But that wasn't the original idea, so it's not going to happen.
49. Voluntarily pay off some of my student debt.
LOL, WHOOPS. Instead of paying some of it off, I added $30,000 to it. My bad...
50. Plan a weekend getaway with friends.
I'm not actually convinced that I'm a weekend getaway person... Plus, given that most of the friends I would actually go on a weekend getaway with live Places That Are Not Melbourne (Or, Indeed, Australia), this would be more than a little tricky.
51. Attend a midnight premiere.
I don't think I thought about the fact that a midnight premiere would finish at like 2.30am, and that I'm basically allergic to leaving the house any later than 7.30.
52. See Geelong play a game at Kardinia Park.
Tickets for Geelong home games are basically as scarce as hen's teeth unless you're a member. Sad panda.
60. Take a self portrait at least once a month.
I failed this one in the very first month of my challenge. I haven't really gotten any better.
67. Buy a leather jacket.
One that would have been a lot easier if the trend for leather jackets in recent years hadn't involved zips that run diagonally from one hip to the opposite shoulder, a look that REALLY doesn't work when you have boobs.
71. Buy a new chest of drawers.
Not only does this cost money, but I realised that it would basically be wasted money because my chest of drawers is basically empty.
73. Design a blog banner.
Why would I, when Kim designed me such a pretty pretty blog??
82. Wear a skirt or dress every day for a week.
Um. I have no idea why I put this on here. I think I was still in the wake of marvelling at the fact that Kat did Frocktober. I, on the other hand, basically hate skirts and dresses. I own like three skirts and four dresses, all but two of which are too fancy for everyday wear.
84. Adopt a dog.
I would dearly love to do this. But I don't have the money to feed or groom a dog, let alone taking it to the vet. And it would be enormously unfair on my parents, given that most rental properties in Australia don't allow pets...
93. Go to bed before 11pm every night for a fortnight.
Well this was just stupid. Every WEEKNIGHT for a fortnight would have made sense. But every night?? Considering I don't get up until after 10am most weekends, I would have been staring at the ceiling until 2am on a couple of nights in here. I do still think I need to go to bed earlier, though...
101. Donate $10 to charity for each unfinished goal.
Uh, yeah, I don't have $480. Even not including the ones here and even if I cross off a couple more tasks in the next couple of weeks, I won't have the money to do this. Sorry, charity. I'll make it up to you...
Welp. At least a 25% failure rate. That's pretty terrible.
Have you ever given up on goals?
K xx

Challenge recipe 23: Basmati rice salad
In the spirit of bringing back things that I've left half finished (see also: the start of yesterday's post about my trip to New Zealand), I figured it was about time to get a wriggle on with my cookbook challenge, which I started nearly three years ago and still have another six-ish recipes to complete by the beginning of April. Somehow, I went the whole of 2013 without making any new recipes from my cookbooks. Whoops????
Anyway, this one is going to be almost completely lacking in photos because a) I completely forgot, and b) I was making it because people were coming over for dinner, and I figured they probably wouldn't like it if I got all "Oh, the main course is going to be another 15 minutes or so because I need to photograph the salad from a hundred different angles, 'kay?"
ANYWAY. Here's the book:
My handwritten recipe book, filled with stuff I've stolen from Mum and written down from magazines as well as the best of the best from Dessert Day (the good but not great ones get printed and shoved in the front in a plastic pocket).
Here's what you'll need:
2 cups basmati rice
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tsp brown or black mustard seeds
1/3 cup coarsely torn coriander leaves (that's cilantro to you, America)
3 small red chillis, seeded and finely chopped
2 tbsp finely chopped ginger
1 cup plain yoghurt
And here's how you do it:
Cook rice until tender. Drain, rinse under cold water, and drain again. Place in a large bowl. Heat oil in small frying pan. Add mustard seeds and cook over medium heat 1-2 minutes or until seeds start to pop (it's a lot like making popcorn, so you may want to add a lid to the equation!).
Add seeds, coriander, chilli and ginger to rice and stir to combine. Add yoghurt a little at a time until well coated but not too wet. Season with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature.
Serves 6.
The verdict?
It may not look particularly pretty in the above photo, but it's insanely tasty even to coriander haters like me. It's always been a hit when I've made it, and goes equally well with barbequed chicken or beef in summer. Give it a crack and see what you think!!
Is this something you'd be interested in making?

On Friday, my mum and I headed into the city for her VERY belated birthday present (her birthday's in August) - afternoon tea at The Hotel Windsor. I'd completely forgotten that I'd put "have high tea somewhere nice" on my Day Zero list until I was writing my post last week about seeing Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. YAY HAPPY COINCIDENCE.
Interestingly, since writing my Day Zero list, I have discovered that high tea is the poor people term for such an event, on the basis that it was all fancy compared to their regular lives. And while it may have been fancy compared to my regular life, I'm going to go ahead and call it afternoon tea like rich people did back in the day, because I went to snooty private school and I can. Or something.
ANYWAY.
That's The Hotel Windsor. It was built in 1883 and started its life as The Grand. It's pretty much opposite State Parliament at the swanky end of the CBD.
And here's what they presented us with when we sat down:
Yes, we got one of those EACH. Mum, as you can see, got a slightly different one to me because hers was all gluten free. Five finger sandwiches, five petit fours, and two scones. Plus, a glass of bubbly each. And fourteen different kinds of tea.
Hello, deliciousness. Two eclairs - one caramel, one lamington, a lemon meringue pie, a mille feuille and a teeny tiny piece of sacher torte. And yes, I ate all of them and then regretted it.
But I honestly think my favourite part was the scones. With a healthy dose of raspberry jam and clotted cream added, they. were. TO DIE FOR. I'm not usually a big fan of scones - they make your teeth squeaky for some weird reason - but for these? I instantly changed my assessment of scones. And no, there are no pictures of said scones because I was too busy shoving them in my face. Sorry not sorry.
Hell, even the TEA was enjoyable and I'm not a tea drinker. Okay, so I had peppermint tea, which isn't *really* tea, but whatever...
Anyway, I'm thinking that I may have to try out the afternoon tea spreads at other fancy hotels around Melbourne. You know, for comparative purposes...
Have you been to a proper afternoon tea?

101 in 1001 #42
On Sunday night, I crossed something else off my Day Zero list - to see one of my favourite bands in concert. I admit, when I put this on the list, I was anticipating that it would be a big name band like Green Day or The Offspring. Alas, such bands seem completely uninterested in touring Australia. The Gin Blossoms and Everclear both toured earlier in the year, but I couldn't find anyone willing to subject themselves to the 90s awesomeness. Womp womp.
So when I saw a couple of months ago that Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were going to be touring Australia, I obviously turned to Twitter looking for someone else who was equally excited about the prospect of seeing a punk cover band. And luckily for me, I found someone - my BFF Kat's younger sister, Megan!
So on Sunday night, after much flailing with excitement over Twitter in the days preceding, we headed into the Corner Hotel. It was a decidedly weird crowd, with everyone from 50-somethings to 18 year olds, from full-blown plaid-wearing, mohawk-having punks to a woman in a suit and heels who looked like she'd come straight from church. So...that was interesting.
The show, however, was pretty fantastic. I was a little disappointed that they didn't do my all time favourite - The Boxer - and that they didn't play Friday On My Mind, which seems like an enormous oversight on their Australian tour. But overall, it was a lot of fun. They played a lot of their older stuff (which I far prefer to their newer ukulele-filled stuff), including Leaving on a Jet Plane, Only the Good Die Young, Mandy, Rocket Man, Over the Rainbow, and Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard.
Their running joke between songs was "This next one's a cover", which had the girl in front of us - a non-punk fan who'd been dragged along by her boyfriend - incredibly confused.
Anyway, it was a pretty spectacular concert, despite the incredibly tall men who kept ending up directly in front of us... It's definitely worth going to see Me First and the Gimme Gimmes in concert if you ever get the chance!

Movie Monday: AFI 100 Years 100 Films Edition, Take 2
So I ran out of time to watch a movie this weekend, thank to marathoning my way through several discs of Supernatural season 8, hanging out with Little Miss A, and attending a concert last night that I'll discuss in more detail later in the week. So I figured that I'd update you on my thoughts about the next ten movies that I've crossed off the AFI's 100 Years 100 Films list in the past six weeks or so.
#4 - Raging Bull
I'm not really a big fan of boxing, and pretty much all I learnt from watching this movie is that boxers (or at least Jake la Motta) are kind of epic douchebags. Robert de Niro was pretty damned convincing in the role though.
#8 - Schindler's List
![]() |
| Source |
#12 - The Searchers
Westerns aren't really my thing, so it's probably not a huge surprise that I didn't really enjoy this movie. It was okay, I guess, but pretty dated. Like, "we cast a German guy as the Native American chief" kind of dated...
#15 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
![]() |
| WTF. Also, source. |
#18 - The General
Surprisingly enjoyable, if more than a little ridiculous. It was my first experience with a silent movie, so I spent a good chunk of it feeling like it was insanely overacted. But at times, it was completely and utterly hilarious and I was in fits of hysterics on the floor over it.
#36 - The Bridge on the River Kwai
![]() |
| Source |
#43 - Midnight Cowboy
Oh, goodness. I don't know what I was expecting from this, but it CERTAINLY wasn't Jon Voight playing a male prostitute and hanging out with a seriously squirrelly Dustin Hoffman. The whole thing was kind of bizarre, to be honest.
#46 - It Happened One Night
![]() |
| Source |
#47 - A Streetcar Named Desire
I'm not entirely sure how I was supposed to feel about this. I hated every single character with a fiery passion, and the plot was pretty bonkers. On the plus side, Marlon Brando had some fabulous biceps...
#48 - Rear Window
![]() |
| Source |
#71 - Saving Private Ryan
The opening nearly killed me. It was indescribably brutal, and deserved all its Oscars, and I totally cried like a baby at the end.
So there you have it. 42 down, 58 to go...
Do you agree with my assessments? Disagree? Which ones? And why?

101 in 1001 #16
I realised a couple of days ago that I managed to cross another item off my 101 in 1001 list without even realising it - I've now been to twenty restaurants (of the non-chain variety) that I'd never been to before!
Mamasita, Melbourne 25/7/2011
My first meeting with the lovely Deidre. It's hard to believe it was only two years ago! I recommend going for lunch if you don't want to wait in the queue for a hundred years.
Russian Tea Time, Chicago 20/8/2011
With Hello Wisconsin and her husband, when I was in town for the 20SB Summit. I pretty much didn't need to eat for a week afterwards.
Mister Bianco, Kew 27/1/2012
A "thanks for letting me stay with you for, like, ever" dinner courtesy of a family friend. The food was pretty great.
Chinese Jin Dumpling House, Kew 30/5/2012
In which Char and I went out for lunch and ate pretty much all the dumplings in the whole of Melbourne. They were delicious. And, unlike the infamous Shanghai Dumpling, didn't give us food poisoning. WIN.
The Curry Club Cafe, Richmond 27/6/2012
Dinner with uni friends en route to a very awkward evening of inadvertent hilariousness.
Hairy Canary, Melbourne 11/8/2012
Catch up with school friends. Delicious pizza, amazing cocktails.
Cider House, Fitzroy 6/8/2012
Blogger lunch with Deidre, Katie and Ruby. As discussed previously, deciding between the 120 possible options of chips nearly killed us.
Chocolate Buddha, Federation Square 18/12/2012
Dinner and cider and awesome conversations (yes, Pacey Witter was involved) with Pretzel Thief.
Mitsitam Cafe, Washington D.C. 11/1/2013
The cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington. Incredible. I wish I'd had the time and money to try everything.
Pedro's, Phoenix 30/1/2013
Mexipalooza with Gina and M. AMAZINGNESS.
Mimi's, Canterbury 8/3/2013
Friday night dinner with the parentals. Good food, but really noisy.
Miss Chu, South Yarra 23/3/2013
A post rehearsal lunch with my little brother C and a few others from choir. Holy crap, it was good.
Cafe Gaia, South Yarra 30/3/2013
Breakfast with C and Paulie. The quinoa porridge was kind of incredible.
Amigos, Melbourne 27/4/2013
My birthday dinner with friends. How can you go wrong with happy hour, nachos, fajitas and churros?!
The Quarter, Melbourne 29/4/2013
With my BFF, Nikki, after a morning of traipsing around the Australian Centre for the Moving Image's exhibition of Hollywood costumes.
Tazio, Melbourne 29/6/2013
Dinner with the parentals and family friends prior to C's farewell drinks. Great antipasto.
Rockpool, Melbourne 30/6/2013
C's farewell dinner. Holy hell, the food was amazing. It's insanely expensive, but totally worth it. I highly recommend the potato and cabbage gratin as a sidedish. It was DIVINE.
Fred Young's, Kew 3/7/2013
We had a family brunch here en route to drop C off at the airport for his flight to London.
Geppetto's, Kew 3/8/2013
Friday night dinner with the parentals and Little Miss A. The Nutella pizza is to die for.
Cafe Republic, South Yarra 28/8/2013
Dinner for my uncle's birthday. Average food, terrible service.
39 tasks down, FAR too many still to go before 1 April. EEK!!

Movie Monday: AFI 100 Years 100 Films edition
So you guys probably know that one of the things I have on my Day Zero list is to watch all 100 films on the AFI's 2007 version of their 100 Years, 100 Films list. I've now ploughed my way through around a third of them, and as I've not had time to prepare a proper post today (VEDA is still taking up pretty much all of my time), I figured that I'd tell you what I thought of them! The numbers against each movie are their rankings in the AFI list.
#1 - Citizen Kane
| Source |
#2 - The Godfather
I've always found this movie kind of confusing - it seems to dump you into the middle of the action with no idea of who anyone is, and as a result I have a hard time keeping the characters straight. I can tell you one thing though - Michael Corleone is a douchebag.
#3 - Casablanca
I'm not a huge fan of Humphrey Bogart for unspecified reasons. There's just something about him that doesn't quite gel for me. Anyway, despite that, I kind of love this movie.
#5 - Singin' in the Rain
YES OMG PERFECT MOVIE IS PERFECT SO MUCH LOVE. I could watch it every single day and never get bored. Appropriately, I'm seeing the stage version on Thursday night.
#6 - Gone with the Wind
![]() |
| Source |
#7 - Lawrence of Arabia
SO. FREAKING. LONG. Also, not particularly exciting. Not really a fan. The music was good though?
#10 - The Wizard of Oz
FAR more awesome than I remembered. And also a lot shorter. Weird.
#13 - Star Wars Episode IV
I love everything about this film. Provided it's the original theatrical version and not the crappy remastered one.
#14 - Psycho
Awesomeness. Love every second of it. Anthony Perkins is so brilliantly EVERYTHING.
#16 - Sunset Boulevard
![]() |
| She gives new meaning to "crazy eyes". Also, source. |
#17 - The Graduate
This generally made me uncomfortable. I blame the Snark Squad's 50 Shades recaps... The ending was kind of odd, but at least the music was good?
#22 - Some Like It Hot
Pure perfection.
#24 - ET
I was TERRIFIED of this movie as a child. As a 30 year old? It's still terrifying. And pretty crap because it's now insanely dated. Mini Drew Barrymore was an unexpected highlight.
#27 - High Noon
Not entirely what I expected, and I'm still not 100% sure about what was happening in some parts.
#31 - The Maltese Falcon
![]() |
| Source |
#38 - The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Bizarre, from start to finish. Humphrey Bogart does an excellent job of being batshit crazy.
#39 - Dr Strangelove
Totally and utterly bonkers, but also pretty great.
#40 - The Sound of Music
SO much longer than I remembered, but filled with the most amazing facial expressions. Christopher Plummer gives crazy good bitchface.
#50 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
While I love this movie, I still don't entirely understand why they'd put Fellowship on the list over the other two, which were FAR more interesting in my opinion. The Two Towers is my personal favourite, but about 90% of that is due to Legolas sliding down the stairs on a shield.
#51 - West Side Story
![]() |
| Source |
#54 - M*A*S*H*
Holy crap, this movie is awesome. I loved every single minute of it, particularly the football scene. Donald Sutherland is perfect as Hawkeye.
#56 - Jaws
Considering how awful the special effects are, this has actually aged surprisingly well.
#66 - Raiders of the Lost Ark
SO. MUCH. AWESOMENESS.
#73 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Pretty freaking fabulous.
#74 - The Silence of the Lambs
| Source |
#75 - In the Heat of the Night
Sidney Poitier is a total BAMF. That is all.
#76 - Forrest Gump
I remember really hating this in the past. While I still found Forrest to be an insanely annoying character, I enjoyed this far more on the rewatch.
#83 - Titanic
Sorry not sorry - I really hate this movie. It's long and boring and gives me precisely zero feels. It actually pained me to devote three and a bit hours of my life to watching it again.
#89 - The Sixth Sense
Still surprisingly terrifying in parts, even if you know what's coming. Also, considering how young he was, Haley Joel Osment is kind of incredible.
#92 - Goodfellas
![]() |
| Source |
#99 - Toy Story
YES. GOOD. WHEDON IS A GENIUS. Sassy Woody is sassy. Need to buy this on DVD immediately and watch it over and over because it's made of win.
So there you have it. 31 down, 69 to go...
Which assessments do you agree/disagree with?!
