When I first started blogging back in 2009, I did so with the intention that only my family and real life friends would be reading it. I figured blogging was an easy way to avoid having the exact same "So, how's Canberra?" conversation five times a week.
As is usually the way, writing a blog leads to reading dozens and dozens of other blogs. Somewhere along the way, I stumbled across Rachael King's blog. And that led to a whole group of other blogs. And they all had one thing on common: they were all members of a website called 20Something Bloggers.
So, after some further investigation and a small case of "oh God, what am I doing??", I signed up. And it changed my life forever. The forums were equal parts hilarious, feelsy and ridiculous. The chat was...usually pretty dead at times I was able to hang out in there, but it was still hilarious and over the top and brilliant.
When 20SB announced that they were holding a summit in Chicago about two weeks before I was planning on going to the US in 2011, I made the rather rash and spontaneous decision to change my plans and go. To a city where I knew no one. To attend a summit with a bunch of people I'd never met before. I didn't even know if anyone I knew was actually going to go, but I took the chance anyway.
And sure, it was nerve wracking. And sure, I basically spent half of the cocktail party sitting in a corner in terror. But it was so, so worth it.
So many of my best friends came out of the 20SB community. People that I talk to every day. People that I collaborate with every day. People whose faces I get to see on a daily basis every August. People who understand. People who are there when I need someone to talk to. People who send me ridiculous emails and text messages and tweets. People in countries all over the world who I can't live without.
Tomorrow, the 20SB community is closing down. And though I haven't been active there since I turned 30, I'll miss it enormously. So here's to us, 20SBers. Life may not have always been easy, but we've had each other's backs the whole way. And I'm grateful for each and every one of you.
Except that girl who cheated me out of a chicken trophy. I hope she stands on a Lego*.

Five days down...
I'm five days into the 12 Week Body Transformation, and so far? I'm kind of surprised about how easy it's been.
Which isn't to say that working out for an hour every day has been easy. I've sweated like a pig, and during today's yoga video, I spent a lot of time going "What in the how the hell did she just do oh dear God my shoulder hurts what do you mean I should breathe deeply I can't breathe at all because my damned boobs are in the way".
And sticking to the approved menu hasn't been easy. I haven't had chocolate since Sunday. I WENT THROUGH PMS WITHOUT CHOCOLATE, YOU GUYS. And I miss cheese. Like, so much. I think I'd murder someone for a toasted cheese sandwich right about now.
That said, the food has - for the most part - been really tasty and surprisingly filling given that it's calorie controlled. There've only been two recipes all week that I wouldn't bother to make again, which is a pretty damned good indication of things, right?
I even survived attending the book launch for Every Move - where Ellie Marney signed all three of my books and I totally forgot to take photos - without stuffing my face with cheese and crackers. Or drinking a litre of orange juice just because I could.
Tomorrow is my first Super Saturday, where I'm supposed to burn 1000+ calories, and I'm a LITTLE bit terrified. Because that is a crapton of calories, yo. BUT. Tomorrow night, I get to have a treat meal. A TREAT MEAL!!!! I may even lash out and use some of my 700 calorie treat meal on chocolate. Because obviously.
79 days to go...

Time for a change
A few months ago, I decided that I was sick of my bookshelf. So I decided that I'd get a new one. Somehow, that snowballed into the realisation that I could also get a new chest of drawers and a new desk and have my room look totally different.
So. There you have it. Weirdly, considering it's got MORE pieces of furniture in it than it did previously, my room feels bigger now. Which is exciting.
I still need to rearrange all the stuff on the walls because it's now all at weird heights, but that's pretty straightforward!
Super important question: should I get a cushion for the chair, and what colour should it be?
K xx
So not long before New Year's, I trekked down to Ikea and spent a small fortune on flatpack furniture. The desk I wanted wasn't in stock, so I came home without it and proceeded to stalk the Ikea website waiting for it to come back in. Except then somewhere along the way, I realised that I hadn't really used my desk in years. Sure, I sat at it from time to time, but mostly it was a dumping ground for things that didn't really have a place. So what the hell was the point in paying $450 for a desk that I was barely going to use?
Instead, I ended up getting another (smaller) bookshelf and a big comfy chair. Which, of course, Ikea didn't have in stock on the day I went down there. Today, though? Today they had that damned chair in stock, and my room is FINALLY finished.
Sure, it wasn't exactly cheap. But it didn't break the bank and still cost me $130 less than it would have if I'd bought the desk, so...there's that.
BEFORE
Not pictured: LIKE THIRTY MORE BOOKS ON MY DESK
Blurgh.
AFTER
Prior to getting the third unit, rearranging things 100 times and buying storage boxes
There's now a little more stuff on the top
I think the chair might need a cushion of some description...

Movie Monday: Guardians of the Galaxy
Several things to note before we get this properly underway:
1. This will contain no spoilers. Well. Not unless you click through the jumpcut, anyway.
2. Movie Monday is going to become a "when I feel like it" thing rather than a regular weekly post. Because it's starting to get really hard to find movies that I love but haven't talked about yet. And a lot of the ones I have left that I want to talk about are movies that you need to be in the right headspace to watch (like The Shawshank Redemption or To Kill a Mockingbird)...
3. Sorry it's been crazy quiet around here recently. VEDA is taking up all my time and creativity. But, you know, you can go watch my videos if you really want to see what I've been up to lately. (Warning: may contain me humiliating myself)
Right. That's the housekeeping stuff out of the way. Let's talk about the latest piece of Marvel fabulousness, shall we?

101 in 1001 #11
If you're a particularly observant individual, you may have noticed something a little different around my little corner of the internet in the last 24 hours.
After seeing a whole stack of my blog friends make the shift in the past month or so, and after reading a forum on the subject on 20SB last night, I finally took the plunge and bought my own domain name!
That's right - you can now access all your usual Kirsti randomness at melbourneonmymind.com!! I'm ridiculously excited about it. Any old bookmarks should redirect automatically, and the RSS feed should be fine too if you're subscribed through a reader. I hope. Because I have no idea how to fix that particular problem...
ANYWAY. The next episode from my trip will be up soon, so don't fret if you're desperate to hear about my American shenanigans! Have a wonderful weekend, my lovelies. Oh, and don't forget, you've got until tomorrow night to enter my giveaway!!

Boredom...
Earlier today, I was looking through the archives of my incredibly illustrious blog for something that I promptly forgot about. But in looking through said archives, I came to a realisation - I used to write about a LOT (not 'alot', which is completely different - see here if you don't believe me!) more than just baking and cooking. And - in my opinion at least - my blog was better for it.
So here we have a little promise - *places hand on heart* I pledge to blog about things that don't involve chocolate and butter and the use of knives and baking trays. And to rely less heavily on photos.
Because frankly, the past few months worth of posts (with the exception of my completely horrifying and embarrassing bridesmaid's dress related post) have been a bit of a snorefest.
I promise to do better in the future. Well, I'll at least *try*!!

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
As you may have noticed, I've switched things up a little. Six months into this blogging experiment, I was sick of the white, minimalist thing. So I've changed it for something a bit more interesting. I'm not sure about some of the colours - it's still a work in progress...
Secondly, I was contemplating doing another post a la The Trouble with Blogging post I did back in January. But then I worked out I could put a handy-dandy box in the sidebar that would show them all for me. So watch that space for periodic updates to what I'm reading and sniggering about!!
Any thoughts on the new format??
K xx :)
UPDATED!!
I've FINALLY worked out how to use the template designer, meaning the layout is now far more exciting. Or nauseating, depending on how you feel about the design... Let me know what you think about this new, improved, less grey version!

How times change...
It occurred to me today that a mere 18 months ago, I was working in the fascinating world of beverage manufacturing (okay, that may have been mildly sarcastic. Sorry guys, but to me it was never particularly fascinating... Although I suspect you may just have guessed that!), where I played with dead bugs and slime, and attended meetings where I took notes that said things like "CNCL spec due pubn 2/5" and "CO BWO up 17% on F07" and "Phosphatase neg 209583".
Somehow in the past 17 months, I've gone from that type of thing every day to spending nine weeks in South and Central America, moving not just out of home but 800km up the road from home, gotten a post-grad degree, and wound up working full time in a museum. And today I attended a meeting where I took notes that said things like "Tas - 3 tax'd kangaroos. 1 standing, 1 sitting, 1 crouching." and "Wildlife import permit required to transfer to ACT - Reg. to handle?? Check if G knows re dingoes" and "Cons. to test using light machine?"
And while it may still all seem cryptic and acronym-y, it couldn't be more different. And frankly, I'd rather play with taxidermied Taswegian kangaroos than with dead bugs and slime! They don't smell as bad for starters ;) And for THAT, I am eternally grateful. Now if only I could find a way to pick up the whole institution and relocate it to Melbourne... Hmmm...............
