So today Google announced that as of July 1st, they're killing off Google Reader. I find this both incredibly perplexing and more than a little bit irritating, and I pretty much have my GReader open 24/7.
At least half of my Twitter feed is "...But WHY???" and "Does anyone have any alternatives?!". (The other half, obviously, is "OMG VERONICA MARS MOVIE KICKSTARTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!")
Based on the alternatives that were offered, I've signed up for Bloglovin', even though I strongly object to a letter being replaced by an apostrophe. We'll see how it goes. If nothing else, I should probably take it as a sign to remove the feeds to all the blogs that haven't been updated in two and a half years...
Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Are you guys freaking out about this whole no more GReader thing? Or is it just me and Twitter??

Goals and attempts at meeting them
So after posting the vlog that Lor and I made in January, I decided that it would be a good idea to make a vlog every month. And when I put this idea forward on Twitter, the general response was "YES OMG YOU HAVE TO DO IT."
Ask and you shall receive, peeps. Ask and you shall receive.
Links as discussed:

You're welcome, internet.

Don't worry, I'll resume telling you all about meeting Sarah and catching up with Lauren and how much of a special snowflake I've been recently soon. But for the moment, I saw this over on Azra's blog and thought I'd give it a go!

Melbourne to LA: the "things I wanted to tweet" edition
So I'm currently sitting in LAX, killing time waiting to board my flight to Washington. I spent a good chunk of the fourteen-ish hour flight over here wishing that I had internet access so that I could tweet all the thoughts I was having. Not having internet access in a tin can over the Pacific, I obviously wrote them all down so I could share them with you later. YAY.
- I'm currently watching The Bourne Legacy and wishing Kim was here. What up, JRenner?
- Uuuuuuuuuugh. The kid in front of me NEEDS to shut up.
- Wait. The kid in front of me is actually TWO kids. Twins. One year old twins.
- The girl next to me is wearing a parka and a blanket. I'm in a t-shirt.
- Oooooh, THREE choices of food? What a novelty!
- Um. Dessert is some kind of cheesecake thing that has actual CAKE on the bottom of it. WTF.
- Reasons why the window seat sucks: people who just swivel in their seat to let you out, forcing you to clamber over them.
- Great. One of the twins in front of me has shat itself and the smell is killing me.
- 20 minutes later, said child's parents still haven't noticed.
- FORTY minutes later, said child's parents finally changed its nappy.
- New theory: all under 5s should be placed in a soundproof booth at the back of the plane.
- People who talk and laugh in the aisles while the cabin lights are down are EVIL.
- Goddammit, I'm so hungry. 10 hours with no food? Not cool, Virgin Australia.
- These children. I AM GOING TO STRANGLE THEM. They never sleep at the same time.
- Just pulled my blanket out of the plastic. It's crusty. Excuse me while I freeze all "night".
- Oh my God. One of the parents just taught the twins how to open the window shades.
- As a result of the above, half the plane have turned into vampires and are hissing at the sunlight.
- Fuck, I hate the window seat. Need to pee, but the girl next to me is asleep on her tray table. Am trapped.
- Watching Brave has made me want to watch The Decoy Bride again.
- Oh God. Now the OTHER twin has shat itself. KILL ME NOW.
- Huh. Only 15 minutes for the parents to realise that time.
- Amount of sleep I have had on this flight: ZERO. Amount of time I have to spend in LAX: 5 hours. UGH.
- Benefit to the window seat? Seeing the sun rise over the Pacific.
- STOP INTERRUPTING THE LAST FIVE MINUTES OF MEGAMIND WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT LAX.
- Things I will never understand: why there are only ever 5 staff working the immigration desks at LAX.
- My hair smells like airplane. Ew.
- Things I will never understand: how people can get to the front of the security line without getting out their ID.
- Things I will never understand: how the full body scanners detect metal IN MY BACK.
- Oh my God. I have clean teeth for the first time in almost 24 hours. It is heaven.
- There are billboards for Les Miserables all over this terminal. Awesome.
I have approximately an hour and a half until my flight to DC boards. I plan on spending it eating and taking advantage of the free wifi. Hey, a girl has to prepare herself for further internet deprivation somehow!!

Adios, amigos
I'm currently sitting at the International Terminal of Melbourne Airport waiting for my flight to LA to board, having braved the wilds of duty free, marvelled at the fact that there's a WH Smith here (seriously, what's with this trend of having international chains AT THE AIRPORT and nowhere else?!), and consumed a fairly nasty hot chocolate.
I'm sulking a little, because I have a window seat and I object to the window seat on account of how I feel guilty having to ask people to move so that I can pee. This results in me only standing up twice for the duration of the flight. And when I *do* stand up, I inevitably brain myself on the roof of the plane. On the upside, VIEW. So far, Twitter is not backing me up on my dislike of the window seat. Clearly, I should travel with y'all because then YOU can all fight over the window seat, and I can have the aisle!
I'm also sniggering, because the woman who's doing the announcements for Qantas is from the north of England, and all I can hear is this:
So...yeah.
Wish me luck getting to LA with my sanity intact, and then surviving my five hour layover. On the plus side, my luggage has been checked all the way through to DC, so at least I don't have to pay $25 to check my suitcase!!
Catch you on the flip side,
K xx

Things I Like Thursday, Volume 2
Seen random stuff on the internet that you find hilarious or just want to share? Head over to Gina's to link up!
Text from Dog is quite possibly one of the funniest things I've ever come across on the internet. Basically, the idea is that some guy's dog texts him while he's at work/out/upstairs.
THIS VIDEO. Kat sent me this over the weekend with a note that said "She's like the Rebecca Black of middle-aged ladies." I suspect that's being cruel to Rebecca Black. I mean, at least everyone can understand the appeal of Friday. Not everyone can understand what on earth this woman is wibbling about. I honestly assumed it was going to be a song about eating food off the floor which I would never ever doexcept that sometimes I do. But only when it's candy.
This list by Forbes of the fifteen richest fictional characters. Number one is Smaug. AWESOME.
You guys. THE FUG GIRLS TWEETED ME.
And yes, I made a 70th birthday cake for the brother of a nun and got paid for it. It was all very random!!
What exciting nonsense have you found on the internet this week? Link up here!

News. Of the exciting variety
You ever have one of those days where everything just seems to go RIGHT? Yesterday was one of those days. Okay, so I tried to comment on a bunch of blogs that use Disqus, and it decided it hates me and ate all my comments. And the comments I wrote going "ARGH, IT ATE MY COMMENT!!" That part wasn't so awesome. But then when I bitched about mentioned it on Twitter, the co-founder of Disqus tweeted me to say that they'd look into it. #reasonswhyTwitterisawesome
Some books that I'd ordered online and forgotten about arrived. WHEEEEEE - PRESENTS!! (That I paid for but that's totally not the point!) So now when I run out of library books, I have a nice little stash waiting for me. Plus, yesterday was Charles Dickens' 200th birthday. If you've been here for a while, you'll remember that Charlie D and I go waaaaaay back and that he's one of my favourite authors. So yesterday afternoon when Penguin Australia were tweeting pictures of the covers and you had to say which cover was from which book for the chance to win a copy of the book in question, I jumped at the chance. And scored myself a free copy of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Which is completely awesome because I've always wanted to read it but have never been able to find a copy in a bookstore.
But the biggest news came in the form of an email I received yesterday morning.
"Dear K-,
Congratulations, you have been offered a place at ___ University in 1st Semester 2012"
That's right, kids. I'm going back to uni again! I enrolled online today, and it's all official. Classes start in just over two weeks. 18 months from now, I'll have a Masters degree and will be qualified as a librarian!!
I'm crazy excited about it. I wanted to be a librarian from about the time I was seven until somewhere during high school when I decided that archaeology sounded like more fun. (It's not.) So really, I'm just getting back on my original career path. With a fewmajor little scenic detours along the way.
And if you know me at all, you'll know already who my librarian inspirations for the future are:
And how could you go wrong with inspirations like that??
Off to buy a lot of tweed,

30 Days of Books - Day 26
I decided when I came home tonight that it was probably time for me to clean the bathroom. I hate hate HATE cleaning the bathroom, because whoever designed my bathroom was kind of a moron. Seriously. Who designs a bath with a shower over it and then puts in a SOLID GLASS SHOWER SCREEN???? You basically have two options:
1. Stand in the bath while scrubbing it out with bleach; or
2. Become a contortionist to reach the parts of the bath that actually require scrubbing out with bleach.
Tonight, I went with option 2. As a result, my t-shirt now has bleach stains all over it and my eyes feel like I've spent way too long in a swimming pool. Thanks a LOT, idiot design people... *sigh*
Day 26 - A book that changed your opinion on something
I had a hard time coming up with an idea for this topic. But then I remembered this:

Before reading this (which, incidentally, is classic literature in tweets of less than 140 characters and is pretty damned awesome), I really had no idea what Twitter was other than some weird thing where random celebrities would say useless tripe like "Going to the gym then to get a smoothie - yay!". Only with worse spelling...
This book made me realise that Twitter can be so much more than just Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga. It can be freaking hilarious, too. And I'm so ridiculously glad I signed up.

Day 27 - The most surprising plot twist or ending
Day 28 - Favourite title
Day 29 - A book everyone hated but you liked
Day 30 - Your favourite book of all time

Twitter - I has it
Yes, that's right, folks. I've joined the 21st century, and now have Twitter! Who knew it was so useful for stalking celebrities networking with other bloggers and finding out what's new with cultural institutions around the world?!
I must now confess that the first person I followed was Nathan Fillion. Not only do I adore him and love everything I've seen him in (speaking of which, I'm rewatching Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place at the moment. Aaaaaaaah, 1998...), but he's hilarious on Twitter.
Anywhosit, if you want, you can follow me - @melbsonmymind. (Apparently melbourneonmymind is a whopping TWO CHARACTERS too long for Twitter to cope with. *Sigh*)
