Movie Monday: Sixteen Candles

Somehow, I managed to go until LAST YEAR without seeing this movie. Which is utterly ridiculous because I LOVE John Hughes movies. But I think I lumped it in with Pretty in Pink, which I didn't really enjoy (I mean, she takes two okay dresses and makes one truly awful dress out of them. Plus, James Spader as a heartthrob? PASS), and never bothered to follow through on seeing it. BIG MISTAKE. Because Sixteen Candles, unlike Pretty in Pink, is hilarious from start to finish.

Reasons why Sixteen Candles is awesome:
1. Molly Ringwald. She's fantastic.
Source
2. It's a John Hughes movie. Of course it's awesome.
3. Negligent parenting. It always makes for the best teen movies.
4. Michael Schoeffling as Jake Ryan. Perfection, despite his unfortunate love of sweater vests.
Source
5. The older it gets the funnier it gets. For example, The Geek complains about how expensive floppy discs are. BAHAHAHA.
6. Anthony Michael Hall. His character is a total creep, but he plays the part perfectly.
7. Cutting Caroline's hair off rather than just opening the door.
8. Long Duc Dong, possibly the best character name in existence.
Source
9. The music, complete with sound effects for certain characters.
10. John and Joan Cusack are in it, which is kind of fabulous.
11. LOL, pagers.
12. The conversation with her father.

13. The weights falling through the floor.
14. Breaking the fourth wall.
15. The iconic scene on the table at the end.
Source
16. Justin Henry as Mike. He's fantastic.
17. Ginny walking down the aisle. Hilarious.
18. Sam's dad giving the "Ooooh, NICE!" sign when Sam points out Jake.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "I can't believe it. They fucking forgot my birthday."
- "Unbelievable. You make someone a bridesmaid, and they shit all over you..."
- "I swear to God, this has got to be a joke. Grandparents forgetting a birthday? They LIVE for that shit!"
- "Can I borrow your underpants for ten minutes?"
- "Her monthly bill came early."
- "I can't believe my grandmother actually felt me up."
- "Thanks for getting my undies back."
- "And where am I sleeping?" "Sofa City, sweetheart."
- "Dad, she's got her period. Should make for an interesting honeymoon, huh?" "Where are you learning that stuff?" "School." "Good. I get my money's worth."
- "A lot can happen over a year! You could come back next fall as a completely normal person."
- "Take those ridiculous things off, okay?!"
- "Not many girls in contemporary American society today would give their underpants to help a geek like me."
- "Jake, I don't have a car." "Take mine." "Jake, I don't have a licence!" "I trust you."

So. Have you seen it? Do you love it? Or are you going to try and convince me that Pretty in Pink is awesome instead??

Movie Monday: The Breakfast Club

For some reason, I made it until last year without having seen this movie. I know, I know, it's a total travesty. And yet, the fact remains. Obviously, I immediately fell in love with it, as is the case with most John Hughes movies.
Source

Reasons why The Breakfast Club is awesome:
1. Molly Ringwald. She's just fabulous.
2. The soundtrack.
3. Dance parties.
Source
4. Emilio Estevez. Brilliant from start to finish.
5. Claire's lipstick trick.
6. Judd Nelson. Apparently he was kind of an asshat on the set, but he's still incredible.
7. Handraising in unison.
Source
8. Whistling the Colonel Bogey March.
9. Anthony Michael Hall. He looks about twelve years old, but he's fantastic.
10. The explanations of why they're all in detention. Especially considering a lot of it was ad libbed.
11. Ally Sheedy. AMAZING.
12. Allison's lunch. I mean, a sandwich of Pixie Stix and Cap'n Crunch? Come on.
Source
13. Bender falling through the ceiling.
14. Paul Gleason. As with Ferris Bueller's Day Off, sometimes a douchey teacher makes a John Hughes movie complete.
15. It's directed by John Hughes
16. Trying to get back to the library without running into Mr. Vernon.
Source
17. Carl the janitor. He's brilliant.
18. Sushi for lunch. In 1985.
19. Trying to prop the door open with a chair.
20. Makeovers.
21. The ending. Especially now that it adds reminders of Pitch Perfect.
Source
Plus, the following quotes:
- "Any questions?" "Yeah, I got a question. Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe?"
- "Sweets, you couldn't ignore me if you tried."
- "What's that?" "Sushi." "Sushi?" "Rice, raw fish, and seaweed." "You won't accept a guy's tongue in your mouth, and you're going to eat that?"
- "Being bad feels pretty good, huh?"
- "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all."
- "Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain..." "...and an athlete..." "...and a basket case..." "...a princess..." "...and a criminal..." "Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club."
- "If you say you haven't, you're a prude. If you say you have you're a slut. It's a trap."
- "What do you need a fake I.D. for?" "So I can vote."
- "Well, in physics we...we talk about physics, properties of physics." "So it's sorta social. Demented and sad, but social. Right?"
- "Are you gonna be, like, a shopping bag lady?"
- "I don't have to runaway and live in the street. I can runaway and I can go to the ocean, I can go to the country, I can go to the mountains. I could go to Israel, Africa, Afghanistan."
- "Remember how you said your parents use you to get back at each other? Wouldn't I be OUTSTANDING in that capacity?"

So. What do you think?

Movie Monday: The Wedding Singer

I delved riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight to the back of my DVD collection yesterday, mostly because I'd forgotten what was back there (it's arranged alphabetically, and anything after my Star Wars box set has been languishing for quite some time now). I *may* have squealed with excitement when I discovered today's installment. Because it's FABULOUS and I hadn't seen it in years.

Reasons why The Wedding Singer is awesome:
1. Adam Sandler. This was pretty much the peak of his career as far as I'm concerned.
2. The music OMG.
3. Drew Barrymore. She's brilliant.
4. THE HAIR.
5. The song Robbie writes Julia.

6. Wedding dress trying-on montages.
7. Billy Idol. I cannot explain how much I love the fact that he was willing to play himself in this film.
8. A string quartet version of Don't Stop Believing. Ahahaha.
9. Steve Buscemi.
Source

10. The awful wedding dresses. This includes the bridesmaids dresses. And hell, the men's frilly shirts too.
11. Ellen Albertini Dow. Holy mother of God, is she phenomenal. And if you say you didn't like seeing a little old lady rap, then you're lying.
12. George and his one song.
13. Jon Lovitz.
Source
14. Robbie's "The Cure" influenced song.
15. I think of this movie every time I have to pull my elbows in on a plane so the drinks cart doesn't hit me.
16. Christine Taylor.
17. The Flock of Seagulls airline employee.
Source
18.  Sammy's Michael Jackson outfit.
19. Glenn's Delorean.
20. Locking Glenn in the toilet on the plane.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "I don't think anybody could puke more than that kid, I think I saw a boot come out of him."
- "Aunt Linda! You're a bitch."
- "Get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up."
- "Sir, one more outburst, I will strangle you with my microphone wire. You understand me?"
- "Is it true you're in the middle of a nervous breakdown?" "What? No!" "Nervous breakdown! Nervous breakdown!" "Who said that?" "Everybody's been saying that." "Everybody? You're eight years old... the only people you know are your parents!"
- "He's losing his mind. And I'm reaping all the benefits..."
- "I vomited in my hair."
- "Oh my God, she made me a present. I *am* an asshole!"
- "Once again, things that could have been brought to my attention YESTERDAY!!"
- "I got a confession to make: that song was about you."
- "Well, don't be ashamed. You know, when I got married, I wasn't a virgin. I'd already had intercourse with eight men." "Now, that's something I didn't wanna know about." "That was a lot back then; it'd be like two hundred today!"
- "I don't even know your last name." "It's Guglia." "Guglia? Oh, so Julia's last name's gonna be Guglia. Julia Guglia! That's funny!" "Why is that funny?" "I - don't know."
- "We're living in a material world and I am a material girl. Or boy..."

So, have you seen this piece of 90s genius recently? Or is it time for a rewatch??

Another place, another time

Do you ever come across a song that, any time you hear it, immediately makes you think of a particular time or place? I apparently have a ton of them, and the list is constantly growing...

I was talking to Kim last week about Valentine's Day and how the whole "You can only show affection on this one particular day and through the purchase of cheesy gifts" thing is pretty UGH-worthy. And somehow, that did a massive segue kick into me telling her about how Valentine's Day was pretty awesome when I was in grades 1 and 2, because I was at school in Canada and so we basically did no school work all day, we just had a big party complete with a lip syncing competition.

There is a point to this story. And that point is this: a group of girls from Not My Year Level did a lip sync routine to Madonna's "Like a Prayer". And from that moment on, whenever I hear that song, I'm instantly six years old again, wearing my white party dress with pink, red and white ribbons in my hair.

Other songs on the list?

Biffy Clyro - "The Captain": Thanks to Channel 10 using this song to promote football telecasts FOR THE WHOLE OF 2010, this song and AFL are forever linked in my brain. (Also? I had no idea this video clip was such a giant ball of WTFery until now!)

Foster the People - "Pumped Up Kicks": New Year's Eve 2011, sitting on the deck of a mate's beach house with a cider in hand while lamb roasted on the barbeque.

Lady Gaga - "Edge of Glory": This will never not remind me of a particularly horrific squat track at Body Pump.

Green Day - "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)": Paris, 1998, walking down the Champs Elysees. Yup. We were classy like that.

Scissor Sisters - "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'": The cafeteria at Brewery Land. For some peculiar reason, EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR A WHOLE WEEK, this song played on the radio while we were at lunch. It was bizarre.

Plain White T's - "Hey There Delilah": I have absolutely no idea why, but I have this incredibly vivid memory of the first time I heard this song. It was in Peru in 2008, somewhere on the road between Chivay and Arequipa, and I was squished against the door of the minibus sharing Ness's iPod.

Belinda Carlisle - "Summer Rain": New Year's Eve 2006. I went out to a bar in the city with my cousin and her friends, and my cousin got...a wee bit intoxicated...and requested this about seven times in a row. They played it three times just to shut her up.

Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - "(I've Had) The Time of My Life": Year 12 meant that our lockers were in the VCE Hall, a mysterious building that only Year 12s were allowed into. It also had a kitchenette, sofas, and a stereo. We blasted this song at least twice a day for the entire year.

Hugh Grant - "Pop! Goes My Heart": Tasmania, 2010. Sara and I discovered our mutual love of Music and Lyrics on that trip, and may have listened to this song about a hundred times, complete with dance moves.

Don McLean - "American Pie": Back in 2002, Megan and I spent an entire night sitting in one or other of our dorm rooms in the UK and trying to remember all the lyrics to this. Aaaaah, the days before wifi...

Les Miserables - "Do You Hear the People Sing?": Okay, this connects to a story that I have yet to tell you about my trip. We went to see Les Mis at the movies in Phoenix, and were the only people in the theatre. This song was the point where we snapped and turned the movie into a sing-along. And it was AWESOME. (You're welcome for Eddie Redmayne's face, BTW)

I Nine - "Same in Any Language": Lauren's car, driving from New York to Boston and blasting the Elizabethtown soundtrack. Poor Kat was so confused as to why we kept yelling "Did I miss 60B??".

Michael Jackson - "Thriller": My brother borrowed this from the library on VINYL in 1993. I was in my bedroom and had no idea what was going on, and the evil cackling freaked me out.

Dropkick Murphys - "Shipping Up To Boston": Red Sox vs Orieles, Fenway Park, 2011. I don't think I really need to say any more than that!!

Do you guys have songs that make you think of somewhere/when else? Or am I a weirdo??

Movie Mondays: Maverick

I first saw today's installment back in high school. I'd never even heard of it before, but I loved every second of it. Plus, it serves as a nice reminder that Mel Gibson wasn't always the bonkers douchecanoe he is today!
Source

Reasons why Maverick is awesome:
1. Mel Gibson. He's brilliant in this.
2. Maverick's donkey.
3. Alfred Molina. He's a fantastic bad guy.
Source
4. The lucky shirt.
5. Jodie Foster. She. Is. Hilarious.
6. The staged fight fifteen minutes in.

8. Grahame Greene. I think he's my favourite thing about this movie.
Source
9. The stage coach scene.
10. Conning everyone by speaking with the Native Americans in their language.
11. James Garner. He was the original Maverick, so it was only fitting that he make an appearance in this.
12. The costumes.
13. Danny Glover's cameo. PHENOMENAL.

14. The Russian archduke.
15. The bank robbery scene.
16. Maverick trying to chase his horse down in the desert while dragging a tree branch behind him with a wad of money in his mouth.

22. The ending.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Calm down, I don't want to go to bed with you, lady!" "Why not?" "Why...why not?? I'd be too frightened! God knows what parts of me you'd steal. I'd wake up with all sorts of things missing!"
- "I figure it's their fault for being on our land before we got here."
- "I could get back my wedding dress what I was going to have for when I found a husband!"
- "I suppose somebody ought to say something nice about the deceased." "How do you know he was nice? We don't know anything about him! The only thing he's got in his wallet is a bunch of names of whorehouses..."
- "I'm getting too old for this shit."
- "If I can't touch you, I can touch your shirt and dream."
- "From the moment I slapped eyes on this hombre, I smelled trouble. And refried beans."
- "Pa, this man wants to know if you want to buy a burro." "That burro aren't worth a dollar!" "Well, sir, I say you got yourself a deal."
- "Damned thing won't stay in the holster!"
- "I'd rather be rich than dead."
- "Oh, you sure do pick the spots!" "Yeah, I know. You know, the next time you people come and drive us off our land, I"m gonna find a nice piece of swamp that's so Godawful, maybe then you'll leave us the hell alone!"
- "Well, he don't eat much, but he's a regular jackass, and hee-haw hee-haw hee-halways likes to be called Arthur."

Have you seen it?

Movie Monday: Ghostbusters II

Okay, this may seem a bit random, especially as I usually wouldn't cover a sequel without covering the first installment. But if you've seen the last episode of Doctor Who season 7 ("The Angels Take Manhattan"), you'll know why I've been wanting to watch this for the past week or so! (And don't worry if you haven't - there are no spoilers, sweetie)

Source

I actually have a huge soft spot for this movie. It's the first thing I ever remember seeing at the movies. I went with a friend and her parents in Toronto at the ripe old age of six, and ended up having to sit in her mum's lap and hide my face because I was so terrified. Hey, those special effects were top of the line in 1989!!!

Reasons why Ghostbusters II is awesome:
1. The theme song. I mean, come on.
2. Bill Murray. He's pretty fantastic as Peter Venkman, regardless of whether it's this or the first one.
3. The Statue of Liberty. GENIUS.

4. Dan Ackroyd. Hilarious.
5. The bad 80s hair.
6. Peter Macnicol. He. Is. BRILLIANT in this.
Source
7. Runaway baby carriages.
8. Venkman taking the piss out of the psychic guy on his TV show about not leaving enough time between publishing his book and his predicted end of the world.
9. The dancing toaster.
Source
10. Signourney Weaver.
11. The ghost of the Titanic arriving at the docks.
Source
12. Spontaneously combusting photos.
13. Rick Moranis. No late 80s movie was complete without him!
14. The creepy talking painting and its ability to electrocute people.
Source
15. The scene in the courtroom with the electric chair ghosts.
16. The hilarious TV commercial they make.
17. Slimer.
Source
18. The scene where Venkman is taking photos of the creepy painting and acting like it's a model.
19. The river of pink slime.
20. The mink coat coming to life and running down the street (this is what tipped 6 year old me over the edge).
Source
21. The ridiculous painting of the Ghostbusters and the baby at the end.
22. "Higher and Higher" by Jackie Wilson. It never fails to get stuck in your head.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God-given right!"
- "Named after a hot dog? You poor man. You poor, poor man."
- "It looks like a giant jello mould." "I hate jello." "Oh, come on. There's always room for jello."
- "I think you guys are making a big mistake. I do mostly tax law and probate stuff occasionally. I got my degree at night school." "Well, that's fine, Louis. We got arrested at night."
- "Well, better late than never."
- "It's late, I really ought to put him down." "May I?" "Yeah, if you want to." "You're short, your belly button sticks out too far, and you're a terrible burden on your poor mother!"
- "No respected psychic will come on this show. They all think you're a fraud!" "I AM a fraud."
- "You mean you never even had a Slinky??" "We had part of a Slinky. I straightened it."
- "Everything you are doing is bad. I want you to know this."
- "Ungrateful little yuppy larvae. After everything we did for this city!" "Yeah, we conjured up a hundred foot marshmallow man, blew the top three floors off an uptown high rise, and ended up getting sued by every city, county, and state agency in New York." "Yeah, but what a ride!"
- "Venkman, would you get a stool sample? "Business or pleasure?"
- "You know, I have met some dumb blondes in my life, but you take the taco, pal! Only a *Carpathian* would come back to life now and choose New York! Tasty pick, bonehead! If you had brain one in that huge melon on top of your neck, you would be living the sweet life out in Southern California's beautiful San Fernando Valley!"
- "Your Honour, ladies and gentleman of the audience, I don't think it's fair to call my clients frauds. Sure, the blackout was a big problem for everybody. I was trapped in an elevator for two hours and I had to make the whole time. But I don't blame them. Because one time, I turned into a dog and they helped me. Thank you." "Very good, Louis. Short, but pointless."
- "Okay, but after dinner, don't put any of those old cheap moves on me. It's different now." "Oh, no! I have all NEW cheap moves."
- "Have you been outside lately? Do you know how weird it is out there? We've taken our own head count. There seem to be six million completely miserable assholes living in the tri-state area." "Oh, please!" "Excuse me, six million and one."
- "You know, I'm a voter! Aren't you supposed to lie to me and kiss my butt??"

So. Who you gonna call?

PS. Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!!

Movie Monday: Dead Poets Society

I decided yesterday that I've been posting FAR too many comedies, and that it was time to blog about a movie that is spectacularly unfunny, but still amazing. Apparently I am a masochist. If I ever come to this decision again, please come round and knock some sense into me, 'kay??

Source
This movie has been in my life for a long time now. If you ever want to make an entire classroom full of 15-16 year old girls cry uncontrollably for weeks at a time, you should make them study this movie for English. (Honestly, it kind of surprises me that we watched this in Year 10, because my Year 10 English teacher was SUPER concerned about us being too young to see stuff. So she would always fast forward through kissing scenes or violence or death, even in Year 12 Literature. For which we studied Tess of the D'Urbervilles and King Lear... Seriously, that happened. Must Be Thrifty can back me up!)

ANYWAY. I love this movie like whoa, but I can only watch it every couple of years, because I end up a snot covered hot mess by the end of it.

Reasons why Dead Poets Society is awesome:
1. Robin Williams. He was nominated for an Oscar for this role, and he completely deserved the nomination.
2. Phone calls from God.
Source
3. Robert Sean Leonard. I know that to most people, he's Wilson from House. But to me, he will forever be Neil Perry. He had almost nothing on his CV prior to Dead Poets, and he is phenomenal in it.
4. The final scene. Oh my God, so much ugly crying. (Also? Has anyone else ever secretly wished they had a teacher so awesome that it warranted doing this??)
Source
5. Ethan Hawke. Another one with almost no acting credits to his name before taking on such a huge role. He deserves all the awards for...
6. The scene where Todd finds out about Neil. They did it in a single take, and it's completely heartbreaking.
7. Knox Overstreet (played by Josh Charles). Any time I see Josh Charles in anything, I inevitably squeal "KNOX OVERSTREET!!!!" at the television. Knox is such a completely adorkable character.
8. Meeks and Pitts dancing on the roof when they finally get their homemade radio to work.
Source
9. Charlie Dalton (played by Gale Hansen). Another truly spectacular character.
10. Flying desksets.
11. The scene where Mr Keating is trying to teach them individuality through walking.
12. Amazing cinematography.
13. I will never be able to think of poor Walt Whitman as anything but a sweaty toothed madman.
14. Knox's "WTF??" face when Mr Keating is giving his 'Carpe Diem' speech.
Source
15. It's directed by Peter Weir, who's also responsible for Gallipoli, Master & Commander, and Picnic at Hanging Rock.
16. Ripping out the terrible introduction by J. Evans Pritchard, PhD, and Cameron using a ruler to ensure his is ripped neatly.
17. The scene where Charlie plays the saxophone. It always reminds me of Ferris Bueller.
Source
18. It won an Oscar for best screenplay. It deserved more than just the one.
19. Reading poetry during soccer training.
20. Charlie quoting Shakespeare and Byron to the girls in the cave, and claiming that he'd just made it up especially for them.
21. The scene where Keating takes the Dead Poets Society book out of Neil's desk at the end. Anyone who thinks Robin Williams is a comedic actor should watch this scene.
Source
22. The scene where Knox finally plucks up the courage to phone Chris, but then hangs up the second she answers.
23. Whistling the 1812 Overture.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "'O Captain, my Captain.' Who knows where that comes from? Anybody? Not a clue? It's from a poem by Walt Whitman about Mr Abraham Lincoln. Now, in this class, you can either call me Mr Keating, or if you're slightly more daring, O Captain, my Captain."
- "Dead Poets honour."
- "Exercising the right not to walk!"
- "From now on, call me Nuwanda."
- "I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world."
- "I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life."
- "We're not laughing at you. We're laughing near you."
- "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race."
- "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world."
- "Carpe... Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your life extraordinary."
- "Sucking the marrow out of life doesn't mean choking on the bone."
- "You must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all."
- "Welton Academy, hello. Yes he is, just a moment. Mr. Nolan, it's for you. It's God. He says we should have girls at Welton."
- "Language was developed for one endeavor, and that is - Mr. Anderson? Come on, are you a man or an amoeba? [pause] Mr. Perry?" "To communicate." "No! To woo women!"
- "Close your eyes, close your eyes! Close 'em! Now, describe what you see." "Uh, I-I close my eyes." "Yes." "Uh, and this image floats beside me." "A sweaty-toothed madman." "A sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain." "Oh, that's *excellent*! Now, give him action - make him do something!" "H-His hands reach out and choke me." "That's it! Wonderful, wonderful!" And all the time he's mumbling." "What's he mumbling?" "Mumbling truth." "Yeah, yes." "Truth like-like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold." "[some of the class start to laugh] Forget them, forget them! Stay with the blanket. Tell me about that blanket!" "Y-Y-You push it, stretch it, it'll never be enough. You kick at it, beat it, it'll never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying t-to the moment we leave dying, it'll just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream." [long pause then class applauds] "Don't you forget this."
- "Todd, I think you're underestimating the value of this desk set. I mean, who would want a football or a baseball or..." "Or a car." "Or a car, if they could have a desk set as wonderful as this one? I mean, if-if I were ever going to buy a desk set, twice, I would probably buy this one. Both times! In fact, its shape is... it's rather aerodynamic, isn't it? You can feel it. This desk set wants to fly! Todd? The world's first unmanned flying desk set. [Todd throws it off the roof - papers fly everywhere and things crash and clatter to the ground] Oh my! Well, I wouldn't worry. You'll get another one next year."
- "Excrement! That's what I think of Mr. J. Evans Pritchard! We're not laying pipe! We're talking about poetry. How can you describe poetry like American Bandstand? "I like Byron, I give him a 42 but I can't dance to it!""
- "It'll help you get Chris!" "Yeah? How?" "Women swoon!" "But why do they swoon? Charlie, tell me why they swoon!"

Seriously, you guys. Please tell me you cry like a baby in this movie too?? And if you haven't seen it, GET ON THAT RIGHT NOW. Because of all the reasons.

Movie Monday: Back to the Future

I honestly can't believe it's taken me this long to cover today's selection. Because I love the crap out of it:
Source

Hey, what can I say - I'm a child of the 80s!! And it's basically obligatory to love this movie if you're a child of the 80s. Also, if I can't have a TARDIS, I'll settle for a time travelling DeLorean...

Reasons why Back to the Future is awesome:
1. Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly. I honestly can't picture anyone else in this role. EVER.
Source
2. Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. To this day, I see a picture of Christopher Lloyd? My brain goes "Great Scott!!"
3. The DeLorean. It's pretty much a character in its own right.
4. The soundtrack - the score is fantastic, and Huey Lewis was pretty much the epitome of the 80s.
5. Crispin Glover as George McFly. He's fantastic.
6. The scene where Marty skateboards to school and hitches rides behind various cars.
Source
7. Lea Thompson as Lorraine Baines McFly. She basically has to play three different characters in the one movie, and she's great.
8. Biff. He's such a stereotypical bully.
9. The flames on the road after the DeLorean disappears through time.
10. The scene where Marty persuades George to ask Lorraine out by blasting him with Van Halen and pretending to be Darth Vader. Genius.
11. The scene where Marty plays Johnny B. Goode at the school dance.

12. How everyone in 1955 thinks that Marty's puffy jacket is a life preserver.
13. The giant amplifier right at the start.
14. Einstein and Copernicus, Doc's dogs.
15. Uncle Joey's parole cake.
16. The scene where Biff and the other bullies drive into the back of a manure truck.

17. Lybians in a Kombi van. (That's VW bus to America)
18. Doc Brown's alarm clock/breakfast making system. AMAZING.
19. The flux capacitor.
20. The judge who says that Marty's band are too loud to play at the school dance in 1985? That's Huey Lewis.
21. The scene where Doc Brown is dangling from the clock tower.

22. Apparently Ronald Reagan found it so amusing that 1955 Doc was all "Ronald Reagan is President?? PFFFFF" that he made the projectionist stop the film and replay the scene. He also quoted it in a speech. AWESOME.
23. The scene where George finally stands up to Biff. It's just brilliant.
24. It's produced by Steven Spielberg, who pretty much can't do any wrong (the fourth Indiana Jones movie was a notable exception..................)

Plus, the following quotes:
- "I'm your density!"
- "Wait a minute, Doc. Ah... Are you telling me that you built a time machine...out of a DeLorean??" "The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"
- "Great Scott!!!!"
- "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!"
- "If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour...you're going to see some serious shit."
- "Last night, Darth Vader came down from Planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn't take Lorraine out, that he'd melt my brain."
- "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."
- "What happens to us in the future? Do we become assholes or something??"
- "Calvin? Wh...Why do you keep calling me Calvin?" "Well, that's your name, isn't it? Calvin Klein? It's written all over your underwear."
- "Whoa. Wait a minute, Doc. Are you trying to tell me that my mother has the hots for me??" "Precisely!" "What. This is heavy." "There's that word again. 'Heavy'. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?"
- "I'm sure that by 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by!"
- "Strickland! Jesus, didn't that guy EVER have hair??"
- "[plays rock guitar solo] I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... But trust me, your kids are going to love it!"
- "1.21 gigawatts. Great Scott!!" "What the hell is a gigawatt???"

Question of the day: would you rather have a TARDIS or a time travelling DeLorean? And would you go forward or backwards in time???

Movie Monday: Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Okay, first of all? You should all stop by tomorrow, because Deidre and I had a super exciting, supersized Dessert Day over the weekend and the results will be up!

Secondly, this is probably going to be a little lighter on pictures than my Movie Monday posts usually are, because I STILL have crappy, insanely slow internet. How slow, you ask? Well, I tried to download 8MB of anti-virus updates the other day, and after it took 30 minutes to download 300KB, I gave up. So yeah. It's slow.

ANYWAY...

If you're a child of the 80s, you've probably seen this movie a thousand times. If, by some tragic miracle, you haven't, I insist that you go and watch it IMMEDIATELY.

Reasons why Ferris Bueller's Day Off is awesome:
1. Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller. He. Is. Phenomenal.
Source
2. Alan Ruck as Cameron Frye. As much as I love Ferris, I think Cameron Frye is my favourite thing in this movie. And Alan Ruck is absolutely brilliant, even if he was 29(!) when he was cast.
3. The parade scene. Made even more awesome by the fact that it's a Steuben Parade, exactly like the one Sara and I saw in New York last year. Except that the one we saw didn't feature Matthew Broderick singing "Danke Schoen" on a parade float. Shame...
4. Jennifer Grey as Jeanie Bueller. You probably know her best as Baby from Dirty Dancing. I actually love her more in this as Ferris' sarcastic and slightly bitter "How come everything goes HIS way?" sister.

5. Chicago. It's as much a star of this movie as any of the cast.
6. Mr Rooney. He's an epic douche who gets what's coming to him.
7. Ferris playing "Blue Danube" on his keyboard (which, I might add, takes 5" floppy discs!) in coughing and vomiting sound effects.
8. Grace, Mr Rooney's assistant. She's HILARIOUS.
9. Crashing the Ferrari.
10. A spectacular cameo by Charlie Sheen, in which he basically plays his future self.

11. The hilariously awful 80s hair and fashions.
12. The scene where they lean against the glass of Sears Tower and stare down at the streets below.
13. The restaurant maitre d'.
14. The scene where Cameron's sitting in his car, debating whether to go and pick Ferris up.
15. Ferris interacting directly with the camera.
16. Mr Rooney snooping around Ferris' house, and everything going horribly wrong.
17. The whole of downtown Chicago spontaneously dancing to "Twist and Shout". Gotta love the Beatles.
18. The entire scene at the Art Institute of Chicago.

19. Jeanie coming home to find Mr Rooney in the house. Brilliant.
20. Ferris racing to beat his parents home.
21. Throwing the baseball at the stereo to switch it off.
22. It's a John Hughes movie. They were all pretty spectacular.
23. Ferris convincing various freshmen over the phone that he's dying.
24. "Save Ferris" on the town water tower.
25. Cameron pretending to be Sloane's father on the phone to Mr Rooney.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Ferris Bueller, you're my hero."
- "What'd I do?" "You killed the car..."
- "Look, this... This is not a phoney phone call. There is an intruder, male, Caucasian, possibly armed, certainly weird, IN MY HOUSE. Yeah, my...my...my name is Bueller. Yeah, it's real nice that you hope my brother's feeling better, but I'm in danger, okay?? I am very cute, I am very alone, and I am very protective of my body. I do not want it violated or killed, alright?? I NEED HELP! SPEAKA DA ENGLISH?????"
- "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
- "May I speak to Abe Froman, the sausage king of Chicago?"
- "What's the score?" "Nothing-nothing" "Who's winning?"
- "How could I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?"
- "You're not dying. You just can't think of anything good to do."
- "Oh, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavours last night. I guess it's pretty serious."
- "Bueller... Bueller... Bueller... Bueller..."
- "Pardon my French, but Cameron is so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks you'd have a diamond."
- "I didn't hit you. I lightly slapped you."
- "I am not gonna sit on my ass as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course of my life."
- "He doesn't feel well." "Yeah, right. Dry that one out, you could use it to fertilise the lawn."
- "If you're not over here in fifteen minutes, you can find a new best friend." "You've been saying that since the fifth grade."
- "[sings] When Cameron was in Egypt's land/Let my Cameron gooooooooo"
- "Hey batter batter batter batter batter SWING batter."
- "Ladies and gentlemen, you are such a wonderful crowd, we'd like to play a little tune for you. It's one of my personal favourites, and I'd like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn't think he's seen anything good today - Cameron Frye, this one's for you."
- "Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Isms in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people."
- "The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It's a good non-specific symptom; I'm a big believer in it. A lot of people will tell you a good phony fever is a dead lock, but, uh... you get a nervous mother, you could wind up in a doctor's office. That's worse than school. You fake a stomach cramp, and when you're bent over, moaning and wailing, you lick your palms. It's a little childish and stupid, but then so is high school."

I don't think I can deal with it if anyone hates this movie. So I shall instead ask you who your favourite character is and what your favourite scene is. Aaaaaaaand...GO!
