Any more and I'll have square eyes

I was originally planning on doing Top Ten Tuesday today, as per usual. But after spending the past hour looking for inspiring quotes and coming up with a whopping two possibilities, I decided that it wasn't worth spending the entire afternoon looking for others. And I've been talking about books a LOT at the moment anyway, so I figured I'd update you guys on what I've been watching lately. Because why the hell not.

Snark Squad stuff
We're getting towards the pointy end of series 2 of Doctor Who, and I've finally finished recapping season 3 of Supernatural (although I'm way ahead of schedule on that one at the moment). It's been a while since we got a Dawson's Creek recap up, but we're somewhere in the middle of season 3 with that one too.

Friday Night Lights
Source
I'm nearly done with season 5, but I've been putting off watching it because I'm not sure I want it to end... Although thankfully, it's on Netflix Australia when I inevitably feel the need to revisit Dillon.

Criminal Minds
Source
I'm half way through season 5, and I'm LOVING it. Although it's been on the backburner over the past week because I really can't watch it when I'm home alone or I rapidly become convinced that I'm going to be murdered.

Bones
Source
For some reason, when I put Criminal Minds on the backburner, I thought it would be a good idea to start rewatching Bones. And somehow, I'm already half way through season 2. I honestly don't know how this happened, but I'm so busy squeeing over Hodgins and Angela being adorable that I barely even notice the disgusting rotting corpses...

Daredevil
Source
I watched the first episode on Friday night and really enjoyed it. But then I spent the weekend catching up on Snark Squad stuff, and I haven't gotten around to watching any more yet. SOON. Because the opening credits are totally awesome, and I love the little nods to the Marvel movies, and I'm just really intrigued to see how it pans out, even though I don't care that much about Matt Murdock.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Source
I've watched the first two episodes of this, and to be honest? I'm not sure about it. It definitely has its funny moments, but there's also been quite a bit of stuff that's squicked me out. I was never a huge fan of Ellie Kemper on The Office, which probably isn't helping. Because it sort of feels like an entire show about Erin, except not... I feel like I should give it a few more episodes before I decide, but at this point? I'm just not sure...

How To Get Away With Murder
Source
I think I've seen the first four episodes of this?? I was watching it as it aired in Australia, and then I sort of...forgot about it. So now there are a bunch of episodes that I've missed and at least one is no longer on Channel 7's catch up TV site and I'm not sure if I care enough to keep watching?? Because I was enjoying it. But it also felt really repetitive, with the same shots of the bonfire in every single episode...

Brooklyn Nine Nine
Source
Sweet baby Jesus, I am in love with this show. The first season is on Netflix Australia, and I basically marathoned the entire thing. It's absolutely glorious from start to finish. Two of the three female characters are Latina. Two of the four major male characters are African-American, and one of those two is also gay. None of the characters ever feels like a stereotype, with the possible exceptions of Scully and Hitchcock, who are very much the old school, slightly inept cops. But they're there for comic relief more than anything. And it's kind of great to have the middle aged white men be the stereotypes for a change!

Basically, Brooklyn Nine Nine is a gift and it's quite possibly the funniest thing I've seen in years and I absolutely adore it and yes, I totally ship Jake and Amy. Because of reasons.

I really need to catch up on Castle and Elementary and Sleepy Hollow and Outlander and the current season of Supernatural. But there are only so many hours in the day, you know?

What are you watching at the moment? And should I keep watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?? Tell meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Best of 2014 - Music edition

I've covered off books, movies, and TV shows, so now it's time to talk about the best music I've discovered in 2014!

I probably say this every year, but I'm not really much of a music person. I can't stand the radio 99% of the time, and I basically only listen to music when I'm on public transport and want to block out the world. Still, there are a number of stand-out songs and albums for me this year.

Taylor Swift - Blank Space and Shake It Off

One of these days, I'll get enough iTunes credit to download the whole of 1989, but for now I've been obsessed with these two songs for the past few months. They're both absolutely amazing, and I'm kind of astonished (as are, it seems, many others) to find myself a big fan of Taylor Swift and the growth she seems to have undergone this year. And nothing shows this growth more strongly that songs like Blank Space.

Original Broadway Cast - The Book of Mormon Soundtrack

Eventually, I'll get around to telling you guys about the rest of my trip. For now, I'll simply say that C and I went to see Book of Mormon, and it was absolutely amazing from start to finish and the soundtrack never fails to make me ridiculously happy. Also, I'm kind of proud of my new life skill - listening to Book of Mormon on public transport with a total poker face.

The Basics - The Lucky Country

Technically, I heard them perform this song live last year, but it wasn't released until late this year, and it's pretty damned spectacular. It's a return to the great Aussie protest songs brought out by the likes of Paul Kelly and Midnight Oil, and I'm so glad I can finally listen to it over and over again.

Billy Boyd - The Last Goodbye

Excuse me while I ugly cry forever. I have yet to see The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, simply because it doesn't come out in Australia until Boxing Day. But I LOVE that they got Billy Boyd to sing the song for the end credits. Because Billy Boyd singing in Return of the King is such a huge part of what I love about that movie, and so it adds a nice sense of having come full circle to include him in the final part of The Hobbit, especially seeing as the video includes footage from all six films and behind the scenes.

Original Soundtrack - Guardians of the Galaxy

Seriously, there are no words for how much I adore this soundtrack. It's absolutely fabulous from start to finish. 10/10 would recommend.

Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark

I know, I'm late to the party on this one. But I've heard it A LOT this year at the gym, and it just keeps growing on me to the point where I finally downloaded it and listen to it on an endless loop because it's just so stinking good.

What songs/bands/musicians have you discovered this year?

Merry Christmas, y'all. I'll be back on the 29th with my Worst of 2014.

Best of 2014 - Movie edition

Yes, it's the one-off return of Movie Monday! It's the pointy end of the year, which means it's time to talk about all the best and worst things I've discovered this year. I've already done my best books, courtesy of last week's Top Ten Tuesday topic, and I'll get to best TV shows, best music, and worst of everything ever in the next few days.

Many of these aren't movies that were released this year. But they are movies that I *saw* for the first time this year, so it totally counts and if you haven't seen them you should rectify that immediately.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Source
It's no secret that I loved the absolute crap out of this movie. I've seen it twice more (I think??) since I shared my thoughts when it first came out, and I still love it just as much. It's got amazing female characters, amazing POC characters, and it manages to be surprisingly funny given the dark subject matter. And, perhaps most importantly, it feels a lot more like a political thriller than a superhero movie. 10/10 would recommend.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner
Source
Nearly forty years after it was released, this movie still drops truth bombs left, right and centre. The performances are brilliant, especially from Spencer Tracey, and it's full of absolutely phenomenal quotes. And it's - sadly - still applicable today in an awful lot of ways.

Chef
Source
I watched this movie on the flight to London, not having heard anything about it beforehand other than knowing that Robert Downey Jr was involved somehow. So I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be pretty damned fabulous, even if it did make me really hungry. Seriously, don't watch it on a plane. You'll be devastated when they present you with a meal that looks like it's already been half eaten and then regurgitated...

Gone Girl
Source
I'm not sure I could say I enjoyed this movie, because it's indescribably disturbing in so many ways. But as a psychological thriller of "OMG NO MAKE IT STOP" proportions? It was utterly amazing. And Rosamund Pike, who I know best as Lady Harriet Cumnor from the 1999 adaptation of Wives & Daughters (closely followed by her turn as Jane Bennet in my least favourite version of Pride & Prejudice) was absolutely brilliant (and kind of terrifying) from start to finish.

The Fault in Our Stars
Source
Feels from start to finish. Shailene Woodley was fabulous as Hazel, and this is probably the most true-to-the-book adaptation I've ever seen. Plus, it was a hell of a lot funnier than I thought it was going to be, though when it delivered feels, they came in spades. It didn't hurt that the soundtrack is pretty damned fabulous either.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Source
Speaking of amazing soundtracks, this one is possibly the greatest movie soundtrack of EVER. The music fitted perfectly with the (more than a little ridiculous) film, and while it kind of proves that Marvel could make a movie about practically anything and we'd still turn out in our millions to watch it (as long as its cast is headed by a white dude named Chris), it was a hell of a lot of fun, and I loved how it tied in with the existing MCU.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Source
Look, this one is a surprise even to me. With the exception of There's Something About Mary, I've disliked basically every Ben Stiller movie I've ever seen. But this one? This one was pretty astonishing. The blending of imagination and reality was great, and considering Ben Stiller acted, produced AND directed it, the level of seriousness was fairly surprising. Add in some gorgeous settings and you've got yourself a winner. Basically, it was amazing and you should see it even if you don't like Ben Stiller.

12 Angry Men
Source
Holy hell, is this movie amazing. It feels a lot more like a play than a movie. The shots are incredibly long, which is practically unheard of in cinema today. And it's pretty staggering that they managed to produce such an engaging movie given how long the shots are, and given that basically the entire film is just a bunch of dudes sitting around a table.

Veronica Mars
Source
Given that it was created thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, it's perhaps not surprising that this movie is full of sneaky little hints and cameos and Easter eggs for fans. To be honest, it felt a little like an extra long episode of a TV show that hasn't been on the air in a number of years, but I really didn't care. I loved the series, and rejoining the characters we know and love "ten" years on was amazing. Plus, Veronica is a total sass explosion from start to finish.

The Way, Way Back
Source
I really loved this movie. It's really feelsy, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. Sam Rockwell is absolutely brilliant from start to finish, as is Toni Collette. And you can never go wrong with Allison Janney. It's fabulously written and pretty damned great. Basically.

What are the best movies you've seen this year?

Stuff and things

Thing the first
I realised last night that I am a terrible blog parent. My little corner of the internets turned FIVE on 9th October, and I completely and utterly forgot about it. Whoops? Let's have a little dance party to celebrate, shall we?

Thing the second
I'm doing NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November and I'm kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind of terrified about it. So feel free to send me "HAVE YOU WRITTEN YOUR 1,666 WORDS TODAY??" messages at regular intervals during November to keep me on track. Also, as a result of this, blog posts may be somewhat light on the ground. But I'll still be over on Snark Squad a million times a week recapping Supernatural and Dawson's Creek and Doctor Who!

Thing the third
Marvel have released the line up for Phase 3 and I'm alternating between screaming with excitement and emailing Kim to ask her to please explain what I'm screaming with excitement about. But seriously, BLACK PANTHER AND CAPTAIN MARVEL OMFG!!!!!

Thing the fourth
Have you SEEN the Age of Ultron bonus scene that was released? I CANNOT STOP GIGGLING.
Steve, what are you doing?? Also, source.
Thing the fifth
I got a text message from C at 3.45am that said "WHO THE FUCK RUINS DELICIOUS MAC N CHEESE WITH FUCKING CAULIFLOWER?!?!?!?!?!?!". Needless to say, he has strong feelings about cauliflower. And a tendency to forget the time difference.

Thing the sixth
The Basics have released a single from their new album, The Lucky Country, and it's absolutely PHENOMENAL. I saw them perform it live last year - I think it was about the second or third song they played - and that was the moment where I went "Holy crap, I love this band".

Thing the seventh
Little Miss A is insisting that I have to dress up to go trick or treating with her on Friday night. I'm pretty sure I'm going to let my hair dry by itself and claim I'm Hermione Granger. Because that takes the least possible amount of effort.

Thing the eighth
I really want this desk.

What's new with you guys?

TTT - Characters I Would Want to be for Halloween

It's time to link up with the Broke and the Bookish again!

As I've said time and time again, Australia doesn't really do Halloween. It doesn't get dark until 8pm and everything's green, so it's hard to pretend things are spooky and mysterious and harvest-time-y. Plus, we're really lazy when it comes to costumes of any sort. Essentially, if it requires going out to buy anything in order to make said costume possible? We're on the Nope Train.

That said, there are some seriously badass characters that I'd dress up as for Halloween. You know, if it took, like, no effort at all...

1. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series - J.K. Rowling)
I wouldn't even have to try on the hair front. I could just wash my hair, let it dry by itself, and have Hermione hair without any effort! Plus, she's an absolutely phenomenal character and I adore her.

2. Natasha Romanova/Romanoff (Marvel Comics - Stan Lee et al)
She's a comic book character, so it totally counts as a valid choice. Although to be honest, I'd probably dress up as on-the-run-from-Hydra Natasha in Captain America: The Winter Soldier because it requires less effort. Like I said, lazy.

3. Celaena Sardothian (Throne of Glass series - Sarah J. Maas)
I don't think you can get much more badass than a mysterious teenage assassin who also happens to be a long lost self-rescuing princess.

4. Kate Daniels (Kate Daniels series - Ilona Andrews)
The only way you can get more badass than a mysterious teenage assassin is by looking to Kate Daniels, who kicks butt and takes names and has an attack poodle and FIGHTS WITH A SABRE THAT EATS UNDEAD FLESH. Awesomeness.

5. Fair Finley (Wilfair series - Alysia Gray Painter)
Fair's not a badass in the same way the other characters are, but she does a lot of discovering-who-she-is stuff over the course of the series and comes out the other side stronger and more confident. And I could use that right about now.

6. Alexia Tarabotti (Parasol Protectorate series - Gail Carriger)
Alexia is a totally no-nonsense character and I love everything about her. And if it weren't for all the effort it required, a steampunk costume would be totally amazing.

7. Lirael (Abhorsen trilogy - Garth Nix)
What can I say, she's a librarian. And an Abhorsen. That's a pretty fabulous combination.

8. Granny Weatherwax (Discworld series - Terry Pratchett)
I hope to be Granny Weatherwax when I'm old, and spend my time teaching everyone that old ladies should not be taken at face value. Dressing as her for Halloween would just be a head start on that process.

9. Cather Avery (Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell)
Admittedly, my fangirly t-shirts wouldn't be Simon Snow themed, but I relate to Cath a lot, and so it seems appropriate (and lazy because it wouldn't take much effort. SCORE!) to dress as her for Halloween.

10. Admiral Jane Roland (Temeraire series - Naomi Novak)
She's kind of a minor character, and is practically non-existent in the second half of the series but how could you not want to dress up as a woman who commands a heavy-weight dragon in the Napoleonic Wars? Sure, no one would know who I was, but I'd get to wear a hella awesome coat, so who really cares?!

Which characters would you dress as for Halloween?

A good idea at the time

Back in about June, I went to book my tickets to London and discovered that Qantas was in the process of changing their daily flight from Melbourne to London. Instead of leaving at like 3pm, it was moving to an 11pm departure. This seemed pretty much perfect for me, because I was planning on working on the 8th September and then flying out on the 9th. But now? I could work on the 8th AND fly out on the 8th! GENIUS.

Except then the 8th September actually arrived, and it suddenly seemed like not such a fabulous idea...

It probably didn't help that the day didn't get off to a great start - I got up to discover that I hadn't successfully cancelled our food delivery as I'd thought, and that there was a bag sitting on the front doorstep containing four litres of milk, a loaf of bread, 500g of beef mince, and a packet of cheese slices. Luckily, everything except the milk could go in the freezer or survive unopened until I got home, but I had to cart the stupid milk to work with me. And it turns out that four litres of milk is surprisingly heavy...

Work, thankfully, went smoothly. Although I feel like this contextless post-it note that I found on the floor summed up my feelings about the day quite well:

After work, I raced home, spent half an hour on the phone to Little Miss A while she did her reading, watered the gardens (of course Melbourne would experience flash floods the following day, meaning that I could have saved myself 45 minutes of watering. SIGH.), finished packing, showered, realised I was going to miss the tram, frantically Googled the bus timetable, ran out the door with my suitcase, ran back when I realised I'd left my laptop cord behind, shoved the cord into my backpack while attempting to lock the front door, ran to the bus stop (which, thankfully, is outside the house next door), and spent the next five minutes wondering if I'd missed the bus or not. Thankfully, I hadn't.

Once on the bus, I promptly began panicking that I'd left 15,000 things behind (I hadn't) and that I'd forgotten to put the alarm on (I hadn't). I got to the train station without any issues, and reorganised my backpack while waiting for the train. Once in the city, it was off to the airport bus. Luckily, there weren't many people heading that way, so I could practice standing on the right of the escalator in preparation for the Tube.

Eventually, I made it to the airport and checked in without any issues. Then I headed to McDonald's and bought some chips because I couldn't make it through emigration and security without eating SOMETHING. Once through all of that nonsense, I got Rickrolled by Melbourne Airport Duty Free, then went and ordered some proper food, which turned out to be a vegetarian pizza that tasted like bacon, something that really shouldn't be a thing...

Eventually, I was on the plane and ready for almost 24 hours trapped in a metal cylinder. WHEEEEEEEEEE. Luckily, Qantas apparently loves Marvel almost as much as I do, so I spent a decent chunk of the trip watching Marvel movies - X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I also could have watched Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 2, or Iron Man 3. But I figured three Marvel movies in a 24 hour period was probably enough. (I did also watch non-Marvel stuff, but most of it wasn't worth mentioning. Except Chef. That was great.)

The flight was...rather more exciting than anticipated. There was a 20-something girl sitting across the aisle from me who turned out to be insanely claustrophobic, so a couple of hours into the flight, she had a full blown panic attack and spent the next two hours of the flight lying on the floor by the bathrooms while her parents hovered awkwardly. Eventually, they decided to move her and her parents to a bulkhead row so that they had some more space, but because the flight was basically full, this meant having to move some people.

Said people were flying on staff tickets, one of the conditions of which is that you can be bumped at any time. But despite this, they threw a massive hissy fit and complained for like 20 minutes at the top of their lungs. At 3am while the entire plane was trying to sleep. Even after one of the staff had coldly explained to them the conditions of their tickets and informed them that everyone was trying to sleep, they still complained for another 10 minutes or so at the top of their lungs. So that was suuuuuuuuuuper fun. Still, I managed to get about five hours' sleep, which wasn't too bad, all things considered.

After approximately a hundred million years and a two hour layover in Dubai, we landed at Heathrow, where I promptly discovered that in the 27+ hours since I left home, my mascara had gone from freshly applied to this:
"Who the hell is Bucky?". Also, source.
Luckily, I realised before I went through passport control or they may not have let me in the country... From there, I walked approximately a thousand kilometres to the Tube and made my way to my little brother, C's, office. I don't think the fancy pants receptionist downstairs was expecting someone in day-old clothes dragging a suitcase, because she looked a little perplexed before reluctantly giving me a visitor's badge. And then the receptionist at C's company had to try and get in touch with him by 14 different methods because he wasn't answering his phone. (It turned out he was shooting the breeze by the photocopier. Obviously...)

Eventually, we headed back to C's place and I was able to shower which was possibly the most exciting thing of ever. And then we headed out for a walk along the canal in the hopes that the last remaining sunlight of the day (after landing at 1.30, I didn't get to C's office until 4.00) would help my body clock to adjust. After nearly being run over by bikes for half an hour, we abandoned that plan in favour of food, and headed to a nearby pub for dinner.

Once there, I promptly decided to kickstart my holiday in fine form:

Which backfired once I realised that I'd just drunk most of a pint of cider without having eaten in about 8 hours, and I rapidly hit fight-the-urge-to-sleep-on-the-table territory... I rallied with the help of cheese fries and managed to stay awake long enough to get back to C's house and watch some TV before collapsing into bed at about 10.00.

And really, I think that's quite enough for one post! Next time, I brave the mean streets of London without a safety net.

Movie Monday: Guardians of the Galaxy

Several things to note before we get this properly underway:
1. This will contain no spoilers. Well. Not unless you click through the jumpcut, anyway.
2. Movie Monday is going to become a "when I feel like it" thing rather than a regular weekly post. Because it's starting to get really hard to find movies that I love but haven't talked about yet. And a lot of the ones I have left that I want to talk about are movies that you need to be in the right headspace to watch (like The Shawshank Redemption or To Kill a Mockingbird)...
3. Sorry it's been crazy quiet around here recently. VEDA is taking up all my time and creativity. But, you know, you can go watch my videos if you really want to see what I've been up to lately. (Warning: may contain me humiliating myself)

Right. That's the housekeeping stuff out of the way. Let's talk about the latest piece of Marvel fabulousness, shall we?

Bloggy friend shenanigans

So Nikki came down from Sydney to stay for a few days, which explains my absence of late. She's about to leave Australia, so it seemed only appropriate that I insist upon her visiting me before she does so.

ANYWAY.

We did a bunch of stuff together, and I figured I'd tell you about it in no particular order:

  • Played a LOT of Lego Hobbit on the XBox. Obviously, it involved accidentally killing each other a lot and generally being quite confused about what was happening.
  • Went to the zoo. It was absolutely freezing, and the red panda was awake but lurking at the top of the highest tree in his enclosure, the jerk. BUT there weren't many people there, and the rest of the animals were in a far more obliging mood, no zoom lens necessary:
  • Went down to Docklands to the Peruvian festival, which was being spruiked all over the newspaper. It turned out to be like five sad stalls at the side of the little theme park-y bit, which was rather disappointing, so we went out for lunch instead.
  • Made a vlog. When I manage to edit it from just under AN HOUR LONG to something people will actually watch, I'll let y'all know about it.
  • Went to see Les Miserables on stage. It was FANTASTIC, even though our seats were suuuuuuuuuuuuuper nosebleed-y and the people in front of us fidgeted for the entire three hours... I even enjoyed Bring Him Home, which is absolutely unheard of.
  • Made a friend on the tram due to the following conversation:
Nikki: The ticket inspectors in Sydney are really aggressive. One of them once asked me "Why are you here?"Me: Maybe he was just being existential and wondering about the meaning of life?Random girl: *snorts with laughter* I'm so sorry. I'm not eavesdropping, but you guys are hilarious.Me: Don't sweat it. I once spent an entire bus trip messaging my friends about the fact that the girl opposite me was excited to see an IHOP because "OMG CHRISTIAN GREY!!!"Random girl: YOU HATE THAT BOOK TOO???????? Nikki: You have no idea. [insert 15 minute conversation about everything wrong with Fifty Shades of Grey here]
  • Discovered that Kinder Surprise currently have a limited edition range of Marvel toys called Twistheads that require you to effectively remove the top of the toy's head, connect it to another toy, and then twist their bodies. It's as weird as it sounds, and they're all really creepy-looking. See?
Source
  • Ate far too much.
  • Spent a lot of time on public transport.
  • Got to hang out for longer than anticipated because Melbourne decided that immense amounts of fog were necessary yesterday, and that resulted in Nikki's flight being cancelled. YAY!
So. That's what I did when I wasn't here. What's news with you guys?

Marauders Assemble

Remember how I said last week that I finally got a new phone? Yeah, I took full advantage of the fact that it's a fairly recent and pretty popular model to ACTUALLY GET A CASE FOR IT.

I tried to get a case for my old phone when I first got it, but because it had just been superseded by a new version, the only cases on the market were plain and boring. So I never bothered to get one. Which was fine, except that by the end of the two years, the camera was pretty scratched thanks to my tendency to slide my phone around on the bench...

NOT THIS TIME, THOUGH.

In my typical can-make-major-decisions-in-a-split-second-but-agonises-for-days-about-tiny-things fashion, I found THREE cases that I really liked and couldn't decide between them. So obviously, given that they were like $7-$15 each on Etsy, I bought all three of them.

And they are MAGICAL:

Poor Ben now has a camera flash for a face, because OBVIOUSLY I'm using the Lego Marvel one at the moment. I also find it oddly entertaining that you can see Spiderman's little legs swinging in from the top left corner.

Anyway, my plan at this stage is to change cases every month so that they all get equal amounts of love. I'm thinking the Marauder's Map will be next. Yes? Yes.

Which of these would you use first?

Two years worth of randomness

I got a new phone over the weekend (fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally!), and it wasn't until I opened the picture gallery and the text message inbox to find them both empty that I realised how weird it is that we effectively lose two years of our lives every time we get a new phone. Okay, so I didn't really LOSE the photos, because my camera was automatically synced to Dropbox. But there were some quality text message conversations in there that are now effectively gone forever. Womp womp.

Incidentally, this happened while I was getting my new phone: the girl who was helping me was all "Okay, so do you want Endless Talk or Endless Text on your new plan?" And as she was talking, she brought up the details of my existing plan and was like "Oh. You've made like ten phone calls this year. Endless Text it is!" YUP. There's a reason why I have an "I'm allergic to the phone" tag.

Anyway, in honour of my long suffering Samsung Galaxy S2, here are some of the incredibly random pictures that I now have floating around in Dropbox!

Apparently eight year old me struggled with the spelling of cooperation...

My bread had a face:

The eggs had a face:

Found at Target in Washington DC and immediately sent to Kim:

GIANT FORK OH MY GOD:

I still have no idea what the hell this postmark was, but it looks a lot like a ghost flying at me. Thanks, New Zealand:

I'm pretty sure this is the worst idea of ever:

I found Heaven. It's at Officeworks:

Yes, that's a Marvel onesie. Once again, sent to Kim:

Little Miss A decided she wanted to be Ned Kelly for a dress-up day at school. So we made her a costume:

Little Miss A was very unimpressed with my sneaky Battleship playing tactics and didn't understand how she hadn't sunk anything:

Yes, I own a Ghostface mask. And yes, a certain eight year old took it upon herself to model it on Halloween:

Nothing says "Happy Valentine's Day" quite like a little girl with murder in her heart:

MARVEL DUVET COVER OMG. Once again, sent to Kim:

Pirate Easter bunnies. On a supermarket shelf, not in an oven:

Limited edition flour is a thing?!?!:

I ordered a spinach, tomato and feta pizza on Saturday night. It was NOT what I was anticipating...

Please tell me that your phones hold an equally random collection of nonsense photos??

Better alone

Do you ever come across these amazing female characters, and you absolutely love them? And they have a love interest, and you think they and the love interest are really cute together and you spend forever squeeing over them? And then they get together, and you squee like a lunatic. But as the relationship goes on, you realise something: deep down, you liked the character better when she was alone.

This has been happening to me a lot recently, and it's kind of an interesting phenomenon, because it's not one that I've ever run into with male characters, as far as I can recall (well, maybe with Dawson Leery, but that's because he's an awful human being who *deserves* to be alone...).

Anyway, I want to talk about some of the characters that I kind of think are better off alone. Because reasons.

Buffy Summers
It's not secret that rewatching Buffy for Snark Squad completely changed the way I felt about certain characters. Rewatching Angel for Snark Squad has made everything worse, because in season 5, we spend an awful lot of time watching Spike and Angel fight over which one of them gets Buffy. AND SHE'S NOT EVEN THERE. Her relationships with both of them were pretty fucked up, and her relationship with Riley was basically a season and a half of rebound. Even Buffy agrees at the end of season 7 that she's better off alone.

Katniss Everdeen
Much was made of the love triangle in The Hunger Games, but every time I read the books, I'm struck by how reluctant Katniss is to be involved with either Peeta or Gale. At the end of Mockingjay, she basically tells us that it took Peeta the better part of a decade to convince her that having kids was a good idea. Being a part of the Games forced her into faking a relationship with Peeta, which in turn led to Gale being all jealous and "I LOVED YOU FIRST"-y. Katniss is a hesitant participant from start to finish, and it almost seems like she ends up with Peeta just so that there's someone there in the night when she wakes up screaming.

Veronica Mars
Don't get me wrong, I adore Veronica and Logan. Piz can go jump in a lake for all I care. But I read the new Veronica Mars novel yesterday, and I thought it was really interesting that Rob Thomas chose to really limit the communication between Veronica and Logan throughout the course of the story. Yes, it's partly because he's deployed in God knows where. But when they DO communicate? The conversation is stilted and a little awkward. You can't undo nine years of separation in two weeks, so of COURSE it would be awkward between them. All of that aside, I found myself liking Book!Veronica more than I liked Couple-y!Veronica...

Natasha Romanoff
I love the IDEA of Clintasha so much it's not even funny. I squeed like a lunatic when I saw her arrow necklace. But do I want the MCU to be filled with a weepy Natasha by an injured Clint's bedside? Do I want them being all public-displays-of-affection-y before heading off on missions? Do I want a Clintasha wedding officiated by Tony Stark (who got a licence on the internet) in the ruins of whatever threat to the world they've just defeated? NOPE (except maybe that last one because it sounds kind of awesome...). I want her to stay her sassy BAMF-tastic, arse-kicking self. (Although if they want to include some anvils about #secretsexytimes, that would be fine)

Dana Scully
Much like with Clintasha, The X-Files dropped some pretty big anvils about #secretsexytimes between Mulder and Scully over the years. That said, when we did eventually get a canon relationship in the second X-Files movie, it was TERRIBLE. Much better to have Scully on her own with frequently dropped anvils than in a relationship that didn't live up to expectations.

Rory Gilmore
Rory, Rory, Rory. So incredibly smart. Such terrible taste in men... Dean turned out to be a complete douchenozzle with a side of extra-marital affair. And Logan Huntzberger was just awful from start to finish. Jess is clearly the best fit for her, but - much like Logan Echolls - he needs time away from her to deal with his problems and grow up. Thank God the show ended with her on her own, going off to take over the journalistic world.

Cristina Yang
Oof. Poor Cristina's had a rough road. Admittedly, I haven't watched the last season and a half of Grey's Anatomy - I kind of gave up a little after the plane crash, because Lexi was one of my favourites. But Cristina keeps getting paired with these characters who don't understand her or who want completely different things to her and can't see that she won't change her mind about them. And then when she's all "Um, no. You knew that before this even started...", they get all butthurt about it, and she's left to pick up the pieces of her life. Again... BLURGH.

Ellie Linton
I adored the Tomorrow, When the War Began books as a teenager. But Ellie, the gutsy incredible narrator of the series, is SO MUCH BETTER not in a relationship. She goes back to Lee time and time again, even though she hates the things that he does and the way it effects him. She has this awesome sibling relationship with Homer, and then the end of The Ellie Chronicles has a friend being all "You know Homer's in love with you, right?". Um. WHAT?!

Winifred Burkle
Oh my God. SO MUCH of Fred's character was destroyed by the writers making her the plaything at the centre of a love triangle between Gunn and Wesley. She deserved so much better than to wind up in a crappy relationship with either one of them. I don't think I'll ever be over how she was treated in seasons 4 and 5...

This doesn't mean that ALL strong female characters are better off alone - just look at Zoe Alleyne Washburne, or Rose Tyler. Pepper Potts or Willow Rosenberg (minus the Kennedy thing, because NOPE). Olivia Dunham, Elizabeth Bennet, Alexia Tarabotti, Elena Michaels, Piper Halliwell, Kate Daniels, Hermione Granger, Sydney Bristow. The list goes on and on.

Furthermore, this doesn't mean that the characters I've discussed above should be alone forever. It definitely doesn't mean that. What it DOES mean is that the writers aren't doing the characters justice. They pair them with unsuitable characters, turn their whole storyline into a relationship story, or have them fall apart where they previously would have stood up and fought. And it's infuriating...

Who would you add to this list? Are there any that you'd remove??

Movie Monday - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Come on, like you were expecting anything else today! #Marvelfangirl I took myself to see this at the movies on opening day, and OMG IT WAS AMAZING. Things are going to get non-specifically spoilery, so I'll put in a jump cut for those of you who haven't had a chance to see it yet. But I expect you to share your thoughts once you HAVE seen it!

New Zealand - the "OMG LOOK AT THE KIWI" edition

Previously, I flew to Wellington to stay with Kim, and there was much rejoicing.

The day after we went to Te Papa and to see Thor: TDW, it rained. Like, a lot. All. Freaking. Day. And not even the kind of summery rain where it's still warm enough that you don't object to walking to the bus stop and going to do something indoors. Nope, the wintery kind where the rain is horizontal and it's freezing cold and all you want to do is curl up on the sofa under a blanket. Obviously, we stayed home, played Lego Marvel and ate an awful lot of junk food. We may also have watched an episode of Agents of SHIELD and mocked it for being terrible and contrivance-ridden.

My last full day in Wellington, luckily, featured no rain at all. Instead, it featured sunburn. Because when we left the house, it looked like it was about to pour with rain, so I put sunscreen on but didn't bother to take it with me. THEN THE SUN CAME OUT. Sigh...

Anyway, we caught the bus into the city, picked up some sandwiches, and walked the 4-ish kilometres to the zoo. We started out with a visit to the otters and the penguins, neither of whom were anywhere to be seen. So we headed up through the kiwi enclosure - also nowhere to be seen, but this was probably due to an extremely loud small child. Luckily, some of the teeny monkeys were more accommodating:

From there, we went to a display by a red-tailed black cockatoo who was zooming all over the arena and who could do little puzzles with stackable cups and things in order to get treats. Sadly, there was a VERY screamy small child present who desperately wanted to steal the cockatoo's toys and kept running across the floor towards it. This made the cockatoo and the zoo keepers very nervous, but apparently small child's parents had no fucks to give because they basically did nothing...

Our ears needed a break after that, and it was almost time for the chimpanzee talk, so we headed up to the top of the hill to eat our sandwiches and hang out with the chimpanzees and a great view of the city for a while:

We were basically the only ones there until about 30 seconds before the talk started when an entire class of unruly grade 1 kids turned up and swarmed all over the place. YAY... Luckily, the chimps getting their lunch was entertainment enough to shut them up a little. Said lunch consisted of the keeper tossing out pieces of fruit one at a time and the chimpanzees having to catch each piece. And let me tell you, those chimpanzees were EXCELLENT at it. They could easily play cricket with catching skills like that!

Other highlights of the afternoon included my all time favourites, the red pandas:

And the sunbear, who looked incredibly shocked about something:

We also saw a moronic 20-something guy banging on the glass of the baboon enclosure, causing a lot of the juvenile baboons to hurl themselves at the glass with their teeth bared. He thought it was hilarious. I'm still convinced that one day, he's going to wake up at 3am to find a baboon ripping his face off, because they were NOT impressed...

Eventually, we headed back to the kiwi house for the keeper talk. And it was FABULOUS. The kiwi that they had out only has one leg because he got stuck in a trap meant for feral cats (I think...) and it broke his leg so badly that it had to be amputated. They made him a prosthesis, but apparently he prefers to hop, which is basically the cutest thing ever. If you're interested, you can read more about Tahi here. Anyway, he was about a foot away from me and he was so stinking adorable that I probably could have watched him all day. So if you're ever in Wellington, you should go to the zoo and check out the kiwi keeper talk!

Also, you should go to the zoo because they have FABULOUS signage:

After a detour through the gift shop where I bought a kiwi shaped cookie cutter and a stuffed toy kiwi with wonky legs (I bought him for Little Miss A, but ended up keeping him myself because REASONS), we caught the bus back into town, grabbed ourselves a couple of scoops of ice cream, and walked around to Oriental Bay to sit on the beach for a little while. In keeping with my curse, there was naked New Zealander there, although this one was at least a small child rather than a creepy grown man...

We wandered back through the city and took a few obnoxious selfies on the way, because OBVS.

My flight the next day was at around lunchtime. It was insaaaaaaaaaaaanely windy so walking down the hill to the bus with my suitcase was a rather interesting experience - rather like being dragged along by a very enthusiastic dog... Still, we made it to the airport in plenty of time and, after getting rid of my suitcase and checking in, we headed to Donut King, because of reasons.
Stolen from Kim's Tumblr.
And then we sat there listening to flights being cancelled because the wind was reaching insane levels... Fortunately(??) for me, they were only cancelling the propeller flights, not the jet flights, so my flight wasn't cancelled. Takeoff, however, got a little bit interesting. Especially as I was trapped in a middle seat and the woman on the aisle demanded like 14 sick bags "just in case"... O.o

Eventually, I made it to Auckland, found my luggage, walked the million miles (read: 1km) to the international terminal, checked in, had lunch, abused the free wifi as much as possible, and flew back to Melbourne. THE END. And only four months after my trip ended! ;)
